London is a terrifying place for first time travelers. We’ve been to London 7 times now and have had our share of bad experiences, lessons learned and scary moments. Best of all – we’ve made it really easy to get a hold of this valuable information right this very second by releasing 101 London Travel Tips as an eBook that you can download right now. If you need help planning your trip to London – forget Rick Steves – download the Anglotopia 101 London Travel Tips for the stuff left out of most guidebooks.

Sample Tips from the Actual eBook!

  • Watch out for pickpockets. I know that sounds like travel advice from the 1880’s but believe it or not they are everywhere and they prey on American tourists (whom are easily identified). Don’t carry all your money with you or your passport. Keep ID and money in a buttoned pocket or a pocket with velcro that way you’ll notice if someone tries to pickpocket you.
  • Look Right! – Traffic comes from the right in London, not the left as in America. On two way streets, always look right. On one way streets be sure to check the pavement, it will tell you which way to

    look.

  • 24 Hour Time – The British use the 24 hour clock and the 12 hour clock interchangeably. The easiest way to translate is this: subtract 12 from whatever the 24 hour time is. For example 23:00 = 11:00pm.
  • Hotel Check-in – Many of the flights from the USA land in the early London morning, some as early as 6am. While this is kind of nice as you have the whole day ahead of you, it’s usually not since you can’t check into most hotels until after 3pm in the afternoon. Some will let you check in early, but more often than not you’ll be sitting around their lobby for a few hours waiting to checkin. If you’re staying at a good hotel, you can check your bags with the concierge and then go out and explore for the day before checking into your room at the proper time (but be sure to carry your passport and valuables with you). Also many of the cheaper touristy hotels cater to package tours and the busloads of tourists usually arrive right at check-in time, so get your place in line first or else you’ll find yourself in line with a bunch of grumpy Germans.
  • Getting to Covent Garden – Leicester Square Tube Stop and Covent Garden Tube Stop are literally several hundred feet from eachother and Leicester Square can handle the crowds better. So, if you want to go to Covent Garden, get off at Leicester Square and walk up Longacre to Covent Garden.

The folks at Anglotopia have released an e-book: 101 London Travel Tips. And trust me, if it’s your first time going, you really will want to keep your eyes on the pavement (Tip #85). But my personal favorite? Tip #26: Don’t mention the war. Sigh. If only Basil had listened.

The book takes you from planning your trip to London to tips about when you leave. I especially thought the chapters on what to expect with London hotels, cuisine and transport were good. And any first time visitor to London wondering what to expect in London would find the book useful. It has many good tips that will help a visitor and mentions various things that guidebooks don’t tell you about. Anglotopia tells it straight on a number of points especially about certain tourists which I think most Londoners would agree with.

The guide provides lots of useful advice for anyone contemplating a trip to the British capital; from planning your trip, to advising which of London’s multitude of attractions are worth paying to see and which are best avoided altogether. The eBook provides insight into which areas of London are best avoided unless you know the lie of the land or a local. There is oodles of great advice on where to shop. Take Tip 80, which is a series of tips for visitors intending to shop at Harrod’s. Invaluable advice and 101 London Travel Tips is packed full of similarly insightful anecdotes gleaned from trips to London and a genuine interest in all things British.

But never fear! Help is at hand for New Yorkers (and indeed any American) planning to visit London. Anglotopia have created a handy e-book full of 101 tips to help you fit in and get the most from your travels. From befuddling slang words to pub etiquette, transport help to an explaination of the glorious stodge that is British cuisine, it’s all covered and costs but $15 ($10 for a limited time) to download. It’s actually a fun read for Londoners too. Who knew that a Big Mac tastes different in America!
