Loved this post, Lisa! Sunday lunch, gravy, custard sauce and tea. Mmmmm. I don't do the midafternoon Sunday lunch very often, but I can make great gravy out of anything (and low-fat, too), make custard sauce (not from a packet--ooh, I should blog about my recipe) for several desserts, and am constantly putting the kettle on. Some of the other items on the list reminded me of my mother (placing a bet ...). A great list!

I might add, just throw in some "Britishisms" for fun. Rubbish, trousers, bloody, at the end of the day, etc. etc.

I also LOVE the Sunday roast dinner idea. My Gent and I didn't always prepare it (as there are plenty of places over there that serve it if you're short time), but it is truly worth the effort!

Gosh, Lisa!

You are SO nearly a Brit. I couldn't have done a better list myself! Truly brilliant. And I agree with your Mum; Sunday lunch should always be served between 2pm and 3pm, unlike lunch on any other day.

I have noticed that too when they go through the major paper headlines on the TV news, it is always funny to see what different papers find the most newsworthy.

Wow mom, I had no idea that Grandma used to do traditional Sunday dinners. This sounds exactly the same, mid-afternoon and simple roasted meat and vegetables. I do remember you telling me about the special Sunday desserts. I can imagine this is probably a tradition passed on from our Northumbrian descendants.

Your Grandma Dodd was a staunch advocate of the "Sunday Dinner" when we grew up here, maybe her parents' tradition? She got busy right after church, usually. She always cooked a beef roast with gravy, potatoes, etc. And always a special dessert, our favorite was the double chocolate cake. Dinner was served mid-afternoon instead of the usual 5:00 supper time. I think I followed that tradition for a few years when you were little, but going back to work full-time meant sadly that Sundays became a day to catch up on laundry, yard work and other chores instead.

The Sunday dinner comment is definitely true. My family have Sunday dinner together [grandma, aunts/uncles, cousins etc] every week and have done since long before my father was born. It is something I miss whilst I am away at university as cooking Sunday dinner just for yourself isn't the same. :)

Plus, gravy = heaven lol. I am a true northern girl with that. Chips and gravy is probably my favourite treat from the chip shop and comes in a lot cheaper than buying a fish. :D

I find the discussion of the headlines on the morning [and late night Sky] news really useful and quite interesting to see the priorities of the different papers. When the majority [like the Times, Guardian, Independent] are leading with a national crisis, there is always one with a silly headline about a celebrity lol. :)

I put the kettle on a couple of times a day. It's even better with UK-brand tea! I'm considering the purchase of an electric kettle, per the recommendation of a family friend who is both Irish-born and a lover of tea. My husband and I prepare a Sunday roast most weeks as well. I figure that if I can't be there, I may as well keep a little bit of England in my life.

Also, try not to wait for the BBC America or Syfy channel to air things like Doctor Who. We watch our favorite UK shows as soon after the air date as we are able.

Awesome list, Lisa.

If you have an international newsstand in your city - Chicago has several - pick up some British newspapers sometime, they are an awesome read.

I always thought it was kind of strange when I watched them discuss the morning papers on the TV news.

I especially like your last suggestion. :-)
