Anglophile Reviews: Discover Shakespeare’s Stratford Upon Avon DVD Documentary

Last year I had the opportunity to review a DVD called Discover Warwickshire, which was a fun journey through everything to see and do in beautiful Warwickshire England.

I was very excited when the creator of that excellent film, Simon Cox, contacted me again and let me know that he’d made another documentary, this time focusing on Stratford Upon Avon, also known as the home and birthplace of William Shakespeare.

I finally had a chance to sit down and watch this and I can tell you that it’s well worth a watch – for Anglophiles and Shakespeare fans alike.

Simon Cox, the director, take you on a journey through Stratford, it’s history and the life of Shakespeare – all along the way interviewing knowledgable locals and showing some sights that aren’t open to the public.

By far the most awesome aspect of this DVD is the beautiful footage of Stratford, shot all through the last year. It looks great on my HDTV and it was a pleasure to behold.

I’m definitely going to put Stratford on my next England itinerary.

While the focus of this documentary is the life of Shakespare – and honestly, I’m not the biggest Shakespeare fan – there’s plenty for you to enjoy of Shakespeare isn’t your thing. Just think of it as learning about the history of small English town through the life of it’s most famous resident.

The DVD is a reasonably priced £12.99 + £2.50 shipping and handling. About $20 once converted to dollars. You can purchase the DVD quickly and easily on the website here.

Simon always does an excellent job on his movies and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next. Here’s hoping he tackles Hardy Country next!

Comments

  1. As an indication of the popularity of both of Simon Cox’s DVDs, Discover Warwickshire and Discover Stratford upon Avon – these two were the top sellers on the Shakespeare Country eShop in the run up to Christmas.

I live here and work here promoting the area and am generally well informed but there is much information in both videos that was new to me. Well produced, excellent commentary and the up to date images on the latest DVD include the newly finished theatre which only opened on 24th November 2010.

  2. Kate says:

I got to visit Stratford on my 21st birthday – it was excellent! I wish we’d gotten to see more of it, as we were very limited on time (had to drive to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Dublin), but it was a very pretty town that had some things to offer other than just Shakespeare. I’d love to go back sometime.
