This is by far one of the most bizarre stories I’ve read in quite some time. The Japanese – generally quite the Anglophiles themselves – have gone to the extreme and took pains to build an exact replica of an ancient English country church.
Apparently, the Japanese really enjoy getting married in England, which is obviously very expensive. So some enterprising Japanese have brought England to Japan so that couples can have an English themed wedding without leaving Japan.
They built an 3/4 size exact replica, copied using sophisticated laser technology.
The most interesting aspect of the whole story is the fact they built the ting 21 floors up at the top of a skyscraper!
From a BBC Article:
Reverend Will Pridie said the developers had visited the church and took laser measurements to enable the new one to be built.
His wife, Wendy, said the Japanese developers, European Connections Ltd, had found the church by accident.
“They were travelling through Herefordshire and, I don’t know if they got lost or not, but they happened to pass by the church,” she said.
The developers said it was popular for Japanese couples to travel to Western-style churches to get married or for blessings. They then contacted the church through its website and asked for permission for it to be copied.“The Parochial Church Council agreed and they then made the replica,” she said.
Makes me want to start building my own stone thatched cottage in my back yard!

Anglotopia was founded by Jonathan and Jackie Thomas for people who love Britain - whether it's British TV, Culture, History or Travel - we cover it all. Anglotopia was started to get us back to the UK for a trip and it did that in 2009. Now, the goal is for Anglotopia to make our dreams of traveling to the UK whenever we want a reality.
