One of the finest British Crime Dramas of the last few years has finally made it to DVD here in the US. It was worth the wait.

While it’s only the first season (which is by far the strongest, imo), the DVD set is everything a Life on Mars fan could ask for.

I think the success of this show appealed to many types of audiences, those feeling nostalgia for Britain in the 1970′s and those sci-fi fans who were intrigued by the mystery.

Well, the DVD set does not disappoint. Acorn Media has done a fantastic job putting this box set together. Here are some of the special features:

  • Audio commentaries for every episode with cast and crew
  • “Take a Look at the Lawman,” an hour-long documentary with cast and crew
  • interviews and behind-the-scenes footage

  • Interview clip with director Bharat Nalluri
  • “The Music of Life on Mars” featurette with composer Ed Butt
  • “Get Sykes” featurette with production designer Brian Sykes
  • Outtakes reel
  • The wife and I sat down and watched the whole series all the way through and despite seeing it all before, we were still as engrossed as the first time. Life on Mars is one of those perfect TV shows that gets better with each repeat viewing.

The extras are well worth the money and very informative. Once you see the making off stuff, you realize that making this show was a mammoth undertaking.

John Simm is awesome as Detective Sam Tyler but really, the start of the show is Phil Glenister who plays the lovable Gene Hunt. Gene Hunt is one of those perfect television characters. He couldn’t possibly exist in real life, but that’s what makes him so great. And the profanity that this man can create is awe inspiring.

I never bothered to watch the US version, which although I hear is good, it’s just not up to the standard of the original UK series. So, if you were intrigued by the US version, you’ll really love the UK version.
