Best BBC Radio Podcasts

For the Anglophile on the budget who can’t afford Satellite radio, the internet is an invaluable resource to find British Radio content for free that you can take with you anywhere. I’ve found that filling my iPod every morning with these podcasts helps make the day a little better. Itunes does a good job of listing every British podcast you can find, but it doesn’t help you find the good ones that are updated frequently. Here’s my biased, and I hope, helpful list.

Channel 4 Radio Morning Report

This is by far the best Podcast you will find, even better than the stuff put out by the BBC. It delivers fair and balanced news from the morning it was recorded. It is usually online by the beginning of the business day in America. The music will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

BBC World News Bulletin

This is a short broadcast put out by the BBC World Service that gives a quick summary of the latest news headlines. It’s updated every hour.

BBC Newspod

This is an excellent production put out by the BBC. It takes the highlights from all of the day’s news and puts them into a digestible half-hour format. It usually brings in stuff from the other BBC Podcasts so there is overlap. Generally your best bet is just to listen to the Newspod. Unfortunately, it does not come out until later in the day so you won’t have it for the commute to work.

From Our Own Corespondent

This a twice weekly show with stories written by BBC correspondents from all over the world. They provide an interesting and insightful look into the cultures of other nations. You will not regret listening to it. It’s updated on Wednesday’s and Sunday’s.

Wake up to Money

This show is broadcast every morning of Five Live. It provides and fun yet informative venue to discuss business news and the economy. The hosts of the show are quite often funny and break down some hard to understand concepts for their listeners. If you have an interest in international business, you must listen to this show. You won’t regret it.

I was excited to see that the London Times has podcasts. I was very disappointed when it came time to download them, however. Barely any of them have been updated in the last fews months. It’s safe to avoid them all together.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to e-mail me your favorites and I’ll add them to the page.
