Monty Python Sees the Benefits of Social Media

The Monty Python troupe made news a few months ago by releasing a cavalcade of clips for free on YouTube in order to nip piracy in the bud and root out all the bad quality clips.

In viewership terms, it was a fantastic move, with the official videos becoming the preferred way to share clips of Monty Python.

They were heavily criticized for releasing their content for free by the ‘establishment.’ The movie studios couldn’t figure out the benefits of giving away content for free, especially something as valuable at Monty Python.

The comedy troupe justified it with this quote:

“We’re letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there! But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our movies & TV shows and soften our pain and disgust at being ripped off all these years.”

Well, now Monty Python will have the proverbial last laugh.

According to a report from Slashfilm, DVD sales of Monty Python increased 23,000% after the videos were put out for free. Once again proving that movie and TV studios would be better off not treating their customers as criminals.

And now for something completely different:

You can view the whole Monty Python collection on the Official YouTube Monty Python Channel.
