Brit TV News: Downton Abbey and Benedict Cumberbatch Among the Many British Emmy Nominees


Once again the British are well represented in the throng of nominees for the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Leading the charge was Downton Abbey with a total of 12 nominations including 4 acting nods (Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter), writing (Julian Fellowes), directing (Jeremy Webb) and the desirable Best Drama Series. Game of Thrones which is heavy on British casting received 16 nominations in total including Emilia Clarke for supporting actress in a drama series.


Meanwhile Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Stoppard are nominated for their acting and writing work in Parades End, Helen Mirren received a nod for her portrayal of Linda Kenney Baden in Phil Spector and Damian Lewis of Homeland returns to defend the honor he won last year. Other notable British nominees include Cat Deely, Diana Rigg, Toby Jones and Rupert Friend.
