Yes, fan favorites Kevin Whatley and Laurence Fox are set to turn as Lewis and Hathaway in six new 60 minute episodes of the detective drama Inspector Lewis.
Many Inspector Lewis fans will find this news as a welcome surprise as Whatley told the Daily Telegraph last year, “This is the last one as a series. If they want to do the odd one, and come up with a good script, I’ll do it, but I don’t want to keep on going on. I don’t want to be a 70-year-old cop.” And Laurence Fox told the Sun, “Kev and I have decided we want to do other things, otherwise it all gets a bit samey.”
So on that note the previous series of Lewis saw the amiable Inspector ignite his romance with Dr. Hobson, retire, and walk off into the Oxford sunset as his trusted partner left the force altogether. Now the newly commissioned series will see Hathaway returning to police duty after a brief break and sporting a promotion to Inspector with Lewis being drafted in to renew the duo.
ITV’s Director of Drama, Steve November said, “Viewers have a great deal of respect for Inspector Lewis and a huge loyalty to Kevin Whately. Together with Laurence, he has forged a formidable partnership and we’re delighted to have them back on ITV.”
Clare Holman will return as Dr. Laura Hobson along with Rebecca Front as Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent.
Filming begins in Oxford in March, but an air date has not been set.
