As part of British Bazaar week – we’re proud to announce that we’re sponsoring an awesome contest. The prize is the Have I Got News For You Guide to Modern Britain – a comedic look at Great Britain and it’s people.
Many Anglophiles are familiar with the hilarious comedy show Have I Got News For You that airs on the BBC. It’s a satirical look from the politics of the week that usually borders on libel.
From IMDB:
Hilarious, totally-irreverent, near-slanderous political quiz show, based mainly on news stories from the last week or so, that leaves no party, personality or action unscathed in pursuit of laughs. Hosted by Deayton, with team captains Hislop (magazine columnist) and Merton (comedian) joined by, typically, a comedian and a politician, journalist or news figure – although an absent Labour politician was once famously replaced by a tub of lard!
Here’s a clip from the show:
So, now that you know what Have I got News For You is all about – also called HIGNFY – then you’ll surely want a copy of their hiliarios book.
The HIGNFY Guide to Modern Britain is a witty and irreverent guide to daily life in the UK, from the writers of the hit BBC1 topical news quiz. What if the people at Have I Got News for You were to write the Home Office’s Guide to Citizenship? The result would be something like this. Probably. With the hit show’s trademark satirical tone, the Have I Got News For YouGuide to Modern Britain takes readers on a comprehensive and comic tour of daily life in the UK in the 21st century—including irreverent takes on immigration, religion, government, the Royal Family, the NHS, education, the media, popular culture, the arts, and more. It’s a book about what it really takes to navigate the complexities of modern living, from the people who know best: comedians. With an introduction by Paul Merton and Ian Hislop, this is the perfect companion for all fans of the hit BBC1 show. No journey to citizenship has ever been this funny.

I know that there are loads of classic British comedies and they are all brilliant, but the program that has really made me laugh and smile and cheered me is “Gavin & Stacey”. I love it – the entire series!
My favorite Britcoms are always by Bob Larbey, but I’d have to say my favorite is “As Time Goes By” with Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer.
“Only Fools and Horses” sticks in my mind. There’s a classic episode where Del Boy etc get a job cleaning chandeliers in a stately home with predictable results.
My favorite British comedy has to be “Blackadder,” though I wonder if “QI” and “Top Gear” also qualify, as they leave me in stitches nearly every time I watch. Of course, some of David Tennant’s antics on “Doctor Who” make me laugh, too.
I think that \Blackadder\ ranks as one of the best comedies to ever come out of Britain.
It just has to be “Only Fools and Horses” a timeless classic!
The Inbetweeners! And I haven’t seen this show, but I do love Mock the Week!
Have to go with my first and still fave exposure to BritComs: “Are You Being Served?” Never goes out of style.
Rising Damp…all the way! The funniest show I’ve seen.
Funniest all time comedy: Black Adder!
So many to choose from! I started my kids on the Goon Show, then took them through I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again and the Goodies, and when they were old enough: Monty Python and Hitchhiker’s Guide. Now we eagerly await anything with Harry Hill in it (especially loving TV Burp), though, to be fair, his shows aren’t BritComs in the proper sense.
But my all time favourite?? I can’t really choose just one, but one of my current faves is Rab C Nesbitt, and not just because of the dark comedy of the show, but because I can feel slightly superior when I watch with friends – I can actually understand what Rab is saying!
“Yes, Prime Minister” is my favorite.
1.HIGNFY of course – where else could you see the panel teasing the Mayor of London?
2. Armstrong & Miller – particulary their chav RAF sketches.
3. Shooting Stars – Ulrika’s pitta breads being the classic description of ageing.
