Christmas Telly: An Introduction to The Snowman – Video

Christmas Telly is in full swing here in Britain while Christmas gets ever closer. Our coolest discovery so far this year is a cartoon made in the 1980’s called The Snowman, based on a book of the same name. It’s about a boy who has an adventure with the snowman he builds, when it comes to life. It’s lyrical and beautiful. Very moving – of particular note is the song “Walking on the Air” which will bring a tear to your eye – it’s played everywhere here and it’s worth a listen. Someone has put the whole video on YouTube, it’s about half an hour long and well worth watching. This year, there’s a sequel showing on Christmas eve that we now can’t wait to see.

Isn’t it lovely?

Hi Jonathan, I’m sure you’re enjoying your stay here in England and managing to cope with our variable weather conditions!

Raymond Briggs is the writer of The Snowman and there have been a number of his stories adapted for UK TV (Channel 4). Following in the same storytelling and animation style you may be interested to seek out the following on youtube.

The first one was The Snowman (1982) Father Christmas (1991) The Bear (1998) Ivor The Invisible (2001) and for this Christmas ‘The Snowman And The Snowdog’.

The song, ‘Walking In The Air’ is sung on the animation by Peter Auty. However it was Aled Jones who had the UK hit single in 1985. So without realising it you have probably been listening to both versions. On the radio, in the shops, etc it’s likely to be Aled Jones and on the animation, Peter Auty.
