Churchill: Producers of Downton Abbey Order Series Based on Young Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill fans rejoice – the producers of Downton Abbey, Carnival Films, have ordered a series about Winston Churchill’s war years.

The show will be based on Michael Shelden’s biography, Young Titan: The Making of Winston Churchill, the series will follow the wartime PM-to-be’s early years between 1901 and 1915, during which the Harrow-educated aristocrat met and married his wife Clemmie, and took his first steps into politics, quickly rising from MP for Oldham to First Lord of the Admiralty.

There’s no word yet on how many episodes they’ve ordered but if they follow the trend of other period Dramas, we could guess it will be eight episodes long. There’s a lot of story they can tell in that period of time – Churchill had a fascinating life, long before he saved Britain during the dark days of World War II.

If they plan it right, they can turn it into a series to cover his entire life. Something I would certainly watch! It will air in the UK first, I would guess last 2014/Early 2015 and will then be sold to global markets. You can bet it will air on PBS at some point.

Very cool!

Now the question is – who will play the young Winston Churchill?
