David Suchet Retires His Role as Poirot

David Suchet, CBE has announced that this 13th series of Agatha Christie’s Poirot will be his last.  The London born actor has played Hercule Poirot for twenty-four years and holds the record for being the longest running actor to play the same character in a detective series.  He told The Times, “I’m going to play him dying.  After twenty-four years playing a character, and you kill him off, that’s where you should stay.  I’ve always been known in the series as Agatha Christie’s Poirot.  I’m so grateful to her that I don’t think I really want to do another one.”

Together with Miss Marple, Poirot is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous characters.  He appeared in thirty-three novels, one play and fifty short stories between 1920-1975 and David Suchet has played the role of the eccentric detective in every one of them except for one short story.  In November 2011 ITV announced that the 13th series of Poirot would complete production of all of the Poirot stories written by Christie.  David Suchet stated that he would have a difficult time giving up character after playing him for so many years, “He has been a part of my life for so long, it will be an ordeal to let him go.”

    Dear David Suchet,
Your portrayal of Monsieur Poirot over the past 24 years has been a delight to watch. Your sincerity in and for the character shine through every performance. I do confess that your “Poirot voice” creates a calm in me and the setting of the stories take me to my “happy place,” albeit, with people dying. Ah, such is life in a Christie novel!

Thank you for your integrity and quality in your work. My family has also appreciated your talents in Focus on the Family’s radio dramas.

    Blessings to you, Monsieur Suchet!

  16. Well, if it is the end of Agatha Christie’s stories, then, it must be the end of David Suchet’s portrayals. I do hope he can find another role to entertain us with. :) I loved David’s ride on the Orient Express. His enthusiasm was such that I want to take that ride myself even more than before. Tho’ I am sure no one else will get to drive like he did. :) Good luck to you, and thank you for helping to bring to life the mind of one of my most favorite authors.
