Dr: Whooligan: On The Road, Chicago Comic Con: Torchwood Panel!

A DISCOURSE ON BOOZE, BABIES, BLUE GILLESPIE & BARROWMAN BREAKS OUT @ TORCHWOOD PANEL!

Putting  Kai Owen and Gareth David Lloyd in the same place is a recipe for insanity!

These two men are at the core of their being two things, Welshmen and performers. I ‘moderated’ their panel on Saturday afternoon and discovered the madness. They came out pumped and ready greeting an enthusiastic crowd and getting them pumped up.

Kai mentioned that in Wales it was officially time for a drink and they asked the audience if someone could round them up a pint or two for the panel. A volunteer was found and things got underway. Sort of.

As they talked about Torchwood it was pretty clear that they like to tease John Barrowman. Barrowman was the brunt of most of their jokes and they lovingly made fun of his career as a singer and actor. They also added that they did enjoy working with him and the cast.

With Miracle Day, Kai did mention that he didn’t get a lot of scenes with the new cast. Although he mentioned that he crosses paths with Oswald Danes down the road. Owen also talked about living in west Hollywood and working in the US.

He also talked about working with a baby and about how much he liked filming his scenes with Eve Myles. He enjoyed that familiarity as the new series progressed in fiming.

Each actor was asked about being in other projects. Gareth talked about being on Warehouse 13 and playing Watson in an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Gareth also discussed his band, Blue Gillespie and about their new CD. He commented on how much he loves playing music and mentioned that the band was his focus through the holiday season.

Gareth also noted how many more opportunities he was getting over here with roles and mentioned how much he loves working in America,

Kai then talked about appearing in Being Human and elaborated on the differences of working in the USA versus Wales.

Things came to a sudden halt when a man in a Captain Jack costume came in. More Barrowman razzing was done and Kai sang a song about Barrowman before getting a picture with the lad. The great news was that he was helping the young lady carry their beer!  Thus both guests began to be even more fun! They hugged and  took a picture with her to thank her as well. They love beer!

They were not unprofessional in anyway but loved having a laugh about drinking beer. They discussed scotch and  whiskey for a little bit before answering more questions.

Kai talked about his passion for rugby. This led to even more talk about lager and beer.

Gareth and Kai both talked about  the Torchwoood radio plays. They also reflected on making Children of Earth and Ianto’s departure from the show.

Then they talked about some gags on set and joked again about Barrowman. When asked what each actor’s favorite episode was interestingly enough they both chose Countrycide.

A young lady asked them to speak Welsh and both actors did. This led to a brief chat about Wales and being Welsh which ended in more talk of beer,

As the panel wound down everyone in attendance was satisfied and wanted more! These guys did not half ass it. They went all out to give the fans a show and a thrill.

They were fun and the most engaging guests at the convention so far!

Was at the panel. I thought it went really well. The guys were really funny and your moderating was perfect. Thank you for not asserting yourself too much and just letting the guys do their thing. Wish the panel was longer.

  3. Jo says:

Thank you for the wonderful job you did moderating the panel. It was a good mix of questions that you asked and also of questions that came from the audience. I’m glad that we got to hear a bit about Warehouse 13 and I hope that the H.G. Wells spinoff (with Wolcott!) happens.

Welcome to the Kai & Gaerth RoadShow!

While I still haven’t watched the video from this particular panel, I *have* seen several panels w/ these two in the past and your observations about them are spot on. What I have found when attendees see on their con schedule that they’re doing a panel together is much squeeing, laughter & ‘what can’t the panel be RIGHT NOW!’. To say that the fans love them as a team is an understatement. I can’t remember a time when, as far as I know, that attendees have left one of their panels disappointed. Simply put, they just totally rock the house.
