Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is a delightful gem of a movie from the same director that brought us Bend it Like Beckham.

This movie started off annoying. The main character, Georgia has the neuroses of a middle aged women, despite being 14 years old. She was driving me a bit batty with her constant complaining. But somewhere along the way, I was sucked in and started to care about her.

The movie’s plot grows with the character, who thinks she’s an adult woman and should be treated as much. The problem though, is that she is still a child and is prone to making child-like mistakes. The plot isn’t really complicated, Georgia is getting ready to turn 15 and is boy crazy. She wants a proper boyfriend and sets her eyes on a new boy that moved to her picturesque seaside town from London.

Georgia is fun to watch as she goes through the trials and tribulations of trying to impress a boy and snag him. She comes up with scheme after scheme to get the attention of the boy. What’s most surprising is that most of her schemes end up working, at least until they backfire. She fails to realize that the boy of her dreams is actually interested her. She just doesn’t have the confidence yet to realize this.

It was a neat insight into how British teens live these days. I did not see anything too horrifying. As a possible future expat who might raise his kids in the UK, I didn’t get to scared. Frankly, the kids in this movie seemed a lot more interesting and mature than their American counterparts.

My favorite line from the movie was when Georgia’s mother gave her “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” her friend Jazz quipped, “Isn’t that book American? So, wouldn’t it be about American boys?” As if we’re really all that different.

The movie was filmed in a charming English seaside town called Eastbourne. The movie really made me want to go there. I’m a little jealous that the character gets to grow up in a place like that. I would have loved it!

Overall this is a charming little movie that I highly recommend to my fellow Anglophiles. Apparently, it’s based on a series of books, so we may not have seen the last of Georgia.

I give it 5 out of 5 Union Jacks for being the delightful British Comedy of last year.
