Brit Movies: First Look at Hyde Park on the Hudson – Royals Visit FDR in New Period Costume Drama

I can’t believe we didn’t know about this movie already – but I’m so glad we do now.

In June 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor host the King and Queen of England for a weekend at the Roosevelt home at Hyde Park on Hudson, in upstate New York — the first-ever visit of a reigning English monarch to America. With Britain facing imminent war with Germany, the Royals are desperately looking to FDR for support. But international affairs must be juggled with the complexities of FDR’s domestic establishment, as wife, mother, and mistresses all conspire to make the royal weekend an unforgettable one.

Seen through the eyes of Daisy, Franklin’s neighbor and intimate, the weekend will produce not only a special relationship between two great nations, but, for Daisy — and through her, for us all — a deeper understanding of the mysteries of love and friendship.

This movie sounds fantastic and I bet it will be the big Anglophile movie winner of the year. Starring in the movie is Bill Murray, Laura Linney, Samuel West, Olivia Colman and many more.

It opens December 7th, 2012 in the USA. Not sure on a UK release yet.

Here is the first tantalizing trailer:

The saddest thing about the movie just from the picture above, is that they got an actor that looks like Colin Firth, instead of one that looks like H.M. King George VI. King George was a sandy haired blond and a thin man. Hollywood…DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!! Colin Firth won an Oscar for the “King’s Speech”, but he and this actor look NOTHING like King George VI. If your doing period peices look at the information available and re-create and not imitate someone elses work. :-(
