Brit Music: What’s next for Adele?

Hopefully, this may be the last Adele post I do for a while.

Hopefully, this may be the last Adele post I do for a while.

In case you haven’t heard, Adele is the hottest thing in music; since its release in January 2011, her second album 21 has been the biggest-selling album of both years since, and, odds are, it’ll be the biggest-selling album of this year. And, what’s more, it’s still on the charts after all this time: #22 in the UK, and #10 in America.  And now that the first song she’s released since then, “Skyfall” has won the Academy Award for best song, everyone’s asking questions like: What’s next? When’s your third album coming out? Were you serious about the EGOT?

Well, she’s got the answer to the second question. When she was told that fans were desperate to hear her third album, Adele merely replied “Tell me about it, so am I.” She added, “They’ll come when they’re ready, and when I’ve got something to sing about.” In the past few years, Adele has shied away from saying when her next album would come out, and even her label XL admitted that her next album might not come for years.

But, just because Adele’s next album, presumably titled “Insert age Adele was when she recorded this album here”, will be a long time coming doesn’t mean that she’ll be completely silent until then, as she is set to record the theme song to the next Bond film.

After all the success her theme to “Skyfall” gained, EON productions plans to make her as synonymous with the series as Shirley Bassey, singer for the themes to Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, and Moonraker. Allegedly, a source has told The Sun that the producers are willing to replicate the success of “Skyfall,” hoping it’s not like putting lightning in a bottle.

It should be borne in mind, however, that the last gap between Bond films has been about four years. Place your bets as to whether Adele’s next album or the next Bond film will come out first in our comments section.

About Derek

I was named after not one, but two, different Shakespearean actors (Derek Jacobi and Laurence Olivier.) I am a lifelong resident of Chicago. I learned to read at the age of 18 months and credit my love of literature, film, and music with keeping me somewhat sane throughout school. When not writing about music, I like going to plays, and going to Columbia College Chicago where I am a fiction writing student.

  1. Bruce [Yes, really!] says:

I’ll go out on a limb & wager that the next Bond film will come first, & here’s why: they’ve got to be nervous that the franchise is now 50 and the youth market has the attention span of a gnat: they *have* to cut down the lag between films. Conversely, Adele has a new baby, and she’s going to have “new mummy syndrome” now until the biter is 3 or 4 and can be successfully handed off to a nanny for an entire day before Adele can get sufficient “me time” to even *think* of writing something relevant. Kids take over your life [& rightly so] when they’re fresh out of the oven, and songs about dirty knappies have never been big sellers on the pop charts. ;-)
