Anglophile in Exile: New Sherlock Holmes movie trailer released

Recently the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s new film, Sherlock Holmes, staring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law was released. As a Sherlockian, I am eagerly awaiting its release this Christmas. But after watching this trailer, I think I am going to have to suspend my knowledge of the stories and characters in order to enjoy it.

Robert Downey, Jr., is not Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett – from what I see, he has taken of one literature’s greatest, well, dorks and made him into a quirky action hero. Holmes was a boxer, but as far as I remember, that has never really been protrayed in any of the stories on or off the screen. I’m also happy to see the violin playing gets a shout out! Jude Law looks like Dr. Watson to me and I think he’ll suit the character perfectly. I never really bought that Watson should be some overweight, bumbling doctor.

What do you think? Will this movie be loyal to the stories? Should it be?

Could I make a suggestion? Both the book and DVD for “Stephen Fry in America” are available on Amazon and they are really great. I watched the series and I read the book and its a really fantastic point of view about America. Stephen Fry is such a great presenter and he drives all over America in his signature London cab. The series is a must see and the book is a great coffee table book for Anglophiles!

Why was Stephen Fry not credited for his, albeit small, part in this movie? And why on earth did he not have a bigger part?!!
