Great news for Anglophile movie fans – Sherlock Holmes did quite well at the box office over the Christmas Holiday weekend.
It took in a total of $65 Million for the holiday weekend – which is pretty good for a period British movie! I’m shocked that it did so well.
There are several things to take from this – Robert Downey Jr is now solidified as box office gold and we can certainly expect a sequel. I hope it is also the beginning of big budget movies set in a similar Victorian time period (which is the most interesting era of British history, I think).
I hope they capitalize on what worked in the movie (Downey Jr and Jude Law) and shed what didn’t (techno gadgetry and Rachel McAdams) when they begin to make the inevitable sequel.
We’re looking forward to it and when we have news of any potential sequel – we will certainly let all of you know!
Jolly good show guys.
In case you’re interested – Sherlock Holmes was only beaten by Avatar, which stayed at the top and brought in $75 million. Third at the box Christmas weekend box office was Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 at $50 million, It’s complicated came in 4th with $22 million and the fifth top movie was Up in the Air with almost $12 million.

Shed Rachel McAdams? Are you crazy? She was fantastic!
Well, while her character was nice to look at it – I didn’t really see the point in her character. She seemed forced in there and underused.
