Off to a rocketing start with the Doctor falling through space in typical a absurd Doctor Who situation.

In this year’s Christmas special, our Time Lord crash-lands on Earth during the Second World War (sure to be a popular plot point), where he tries to make sure two unfortunate evacuees and their mother have the best Christmas ever. Doctor takes it upon himself to create the most magical Christmas ever for two children who’s father has died (and they don’t know it yet).

Using a magical present, the Doctor transports them to a magical land dominated by an enchanted forest with living trees – but that is when their troubles really begin.

Claire Skinner, Bill Bailey, Arabella Weir and Alexander Armstrong have joined Matt Smith in this year’s festive special, inspired by CS Lewis’s Narnia stories.

It’s a fine line between ‘inspired’ and ‘copied.’ But it’s a line they hold and it’s a fun story overall.

After the huge stakes of the previous series that ended earlier in the fall, it’s nice to see a self-contained Doctor Who story where the world isn’t going to end.

For the record, I want the Spitefire wallpaper I noticed in the background in one scene!

One of my favorite lines is: “There’s no crying in military engagements.”

One thing of note that was very subtle – in this episode he’s not called The Doctor, he’s the Caretaker by the character and the Doctor lets them.

The Doctor gets taught a very valuable lesson in being full of himself.

My second favorite line is: “Hold tight and pretend it’s a plan.”

The special has a nice happy ending and a nice happy Christmas message. We get a cameo from the Pond’s (and it’s quite a bit of time since they saw The Doctor Last). Usually the Doctor Who christmas specials sometimes end up being rather disappointing and Stephen Moffat really delivers with this one. It will become a cherished classic.

The Doctor returns… we don’t know as it doesn’t say when the credit are over. But it’s been confirmed that this is our last glimpse of The Doctor until fall 2012 (we’re predicting and September return).

Happy Christmas everyone!

*Warning* If you haven’t seen the film Love Actually, I don’t recommend reading the following, as it’s full of spoilers. And while we’re on the subject, why haven’t you seen it yet? It was released in 2003! Please go watch it. Posthaste.

Dear Love Actually,

It’s Christmastime once again, and this year I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how much I love you. I really do. To be honest, I love you all year round, but especially during this time of year. Whenever I’m feeling sad or cynical about the world or about love, watching you always reminds me of the good in people, and how beautiful life can be.

Your writer and director, Richard Curtis, is a bloody genius. But I’m sure you already know that. He’s behind some of my other favourite films of all time, but he especially did a brilliant job on you. He filled you with so many characters and moments that are so memorable and beloved, it’s easy to lose count of them all. I recently asked some of my friends (who also love you, by the way) to share their favourite memories of you with me. This is what they said.

Crystal loves the scene when Jamie and his Portuguese housekeeper are having a conversation, each in their own native language, and neither of them comprehends what the other person is saying.

Emily loves the surprise rendition of All You Need Is Love during Peter and Juliet’s wedding, when David and Natalie are kissing backstage at the Christmas concert and the curtain goes up, and when little Sam runs through the airport after his first love, Joanna.

Jonathan loves the moment when the Prime Minister, David, finally tells off the President of the United States.

Shanna loves John and Judy, the timid porn stand-ins who shyly flirt with each other whilst enacting illicit scenes, and when Billy Mack realises that his manager, Joe, is the real love of his life, and they spend Christmas together rather than partying it up, rock star-style. She also loves the funeral for Daniel’s wife/Sam’s mum. Although she’s never actually on-screen (other than in photographs), she’s her own character, and the love, tenderness, and humour associated with her, Daniel, and Sam (and later, their evolving father/son dynamic) is just beautiful to watch.

Brooke loves when Jamie goes after Aurélia to tell her he loves her, and then proposes to her in broken Portuguese in front of her family as well as the patrons and staff at the restaurant where she works.

Shaw loves watching David dance to Jump (for My Love) by the Pointer Sisters inside 10 Downing Street when he thinks he’s alone, and the powerful, raw emotion of the scene when Karen is by herself in her bedroom listening to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell, trying to process how her husband has betrayed her. Her pain is palpable, and the performance by Emma Thompson is stunning.

As for me? Well, I love when Sarah asks Karl to excuse her for a moment after they finally kiss, and she slips around the corner in her flat and silently does her happy girl dance. And my most favourite part of all: when Mark shows up with those heartbreaking, romantic signs to tell Juliet how he really feels about her.

Can you feel how loved you are, Love Actually? Can you? I surely hope so.

In closing, thank you. Thank you for being one of those rare films that I can watch again and again at various times in my life, never growing tired of you. Thank you for the laughter through tears. Thank you for getting Christmas Is All Around, All I Want for Christmas Is You, and God Only Knows stuck in my head for days on end after I watch you.

Most of all, thank you for giving me hope. You see, despite my proclivity for sarcasm, I’m really a sap and hopeless romantic at heart. And I’m quite sure it will seem ridiculous to some that a rom-com of all things could actually give someone hope, but I don’t really care what anyone else thinks. You do that, and so much more. You illustrate so beautifully the ebbs and flows of life; our losses and triumphs as human beings, our sadness and our joy, our weaknesses as well as our strengths. Most importantly, you remind us that love truly conquers all. Sometimes, in the midst of this crazy world we live in, it’s easy to forget.

I’ll leave you now with the profound words of your Prime Minister, David. Um, not Mr Cameron, but rather, the one charmingly played by Hugh Grant:

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there—fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends… If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion… love actually is all around.”

Best wishes for a very Happy Christmas. Mine will be happier because of you. And thank you again. You’re lovely.

Much Love (of course) and Affection Always,

Amie xx

Though today Christmas is celebrated in much the same way across Britain, in years gone by the traditions and customs of Wales were unique to the region. From the quaint to the curious, the Christmas traditions of Wales are as diverse as the landscape itself.

Plygain

Early on Christmas morning, or Y Nadolig, families would gather for the plygain service at the local parish church between the hours of 3 and 6am to listen to carols sung by male voice choirs in 2, 3 or 4 part harmony. The tradition of male voice choirs remains strong in Wales today and such carol services are believed to be a pre-Reformation tradition that was modified to suit new conditions in the 16th century. Traditionally, these church services would be widely attend and being that they were the only service of the year held after nightfall, the attending parishioners would light the church with the glow of the candles they had used to light their way to the church. After two or more hours of singing the service would end and everyone would make there way home to continue their Christmas celebrations.

Toffee Making

A traditional part of the festive season, predominantly in North Wales, was toffee making, known as cyflaith, ffanni, or most commonly taffi in Welsh. Families and friends would gather together and after enjoying a meal, much the same as today’s Christmas dinner, games would be played and toffee mixed and cooked. Toffee making is very much a skill, with the cook having to be able to precisely judge the temperature of the boiling sugar and butter mixture, before pouring the volcanic liquid onto a flat surface to cool. Once the toffee began to cool, all those in attendance would take turns trying to properly ‘pull’ the toffee, a process that is needed to give the candy its light and chewy texture. Traditionally, it was believed that the curling strands of the toffee would reveal the initials of your true love! If you’d like to try making this traditional candy yourself there is a wonderful recipe on the website for National Museum Wales. Why not get your family and friends together this holiday season and recreate this Welsh tradition?

The Mari Lwyd

One of the more unusual Welsh Christmas customs is that of the Mari Lwyd, or the Grey Mare. With one member of a group dressed as an old grey mare, sometimes including the skull of a real horse, visits would be made to houses throughout the village where the group would sing and try to gain entrance to the house for food and drinks. In a strange combination of wassailing and trick or treating, one member of the group would challenge an occupant of the house to a debate, or pwnco, in which both entrants would throw insults and jokes at one another, in the hopes that the visitor would be victorious and be invited in for homemade cakes and a drink of ale. This tradition, unsurprisingly, is believed to be a pre-Christian custom and is still practiced today in parts of Wales.

The Christmas traditons of Wales are unique to the region and fascinating to discover. Much unlike those practiced in other parts of Britain they are very much worth learning more about and taking any opportunity to participate in them yourself. Why not take a trip and rent one of the many self catering cottages in Wales this holiday season and take part in some of the Welsh Christmas traditions yourself? There are activities and markets happening at local museums and villages from the north to the south of the country this season, and visiting is a great way to learn and experience something new this Christmas.

Nadolig Llawen to you and yours this holiday season!

If you’re after somewhere in Britain to take in the wonders of Christmas, there’s no better place to enjoy a weekend away than in the beautiful city of York.

A wonderful city to visit at any time of year, at Christmas, York becomes a magical city. From the beautiful Christmas tree in St Helen’s Square to the exciting displays in the windows of the city’s shops, you can find sparkle and fun everywhere.

Stroll through the city centre at dusk to discover the wonderful decorations and lights covering just about every inch of the shops, pubs and restaurants, not to mention the magnificent historic buildings dressed in their festive finest. Call into your favourite restaurant for seasonal inspired menu, or enjoy a glass of mulled wine or warm, spiced cider.

No city can compare with the wonderful calendar events that December brings to York, from ice sculpting to skating; York has something for everyone this Christmas. Kick things off with the Festival of Angels; a traditional winter festival held annually here. Held in the Minster Quarter, the festival gives you a chance to view some of the magnificent ice sculptures on display that are scattered throughout the streets

There will be plenty of street entertainment such as live music to keep you amused, as well as a variety of stalls selling gifts and treats. There are wooden stalls around the streets selling food & drink, and artificial snow falls to add to the effect.

If you enjoy looking at the stalls and choosing some great gifts for friends and family, or even a treat or two for yourself, you will love one of York’s many Christmas Markets. Beginning with the ever popular St. Nicholas Fayre, this market brings history to life with Victorian costumed traders selling their wares and carol singers singing all your favourite festive tunes.

Around the market you’ll find a wide range of gifts and crafts as well as local produce, including venison and suckling pig.

Other Christmas markets include the Parliament Street Fayre, with festive chalets selling unique gifts and tasty treats such as yummy winter Pimms. The Made in Yorkshire craft market offers you the very best in local arts and crafts, including ceramics, jewellery, woodwork and pottery.

Or head to the Festive Farmers’ market to stock up your larder for the big day. Enjoy the very best of local produce from home reared meats, cheeses and organic vegetables. While you’re here, you may want to stop for some very special Yorkshire Punch.

Don’t miss out on the fun at the Ice Factor, York’s very own outdoor 900sqm ice rink. Situated at the York Designer Outlet shopping centre, skate hire costs £9.50 for the hour, where you can get close up to the 30ft Christmas tree in the centre of the ice rink. If you don’t fancy getting cold or falling over on the ice, you can watch everyone else from the heated Ice Bar and Café.

Surrounding the rink you’ll find a winter wonderland of Christmas stalls selling food from around the world, and small Christmas stocking fillers.

Don’t forget the wonderful festive services at York Minster, carol concerts throughout the city and a number of local attractions all dressed for Christmas. A great example is Stockfield Park stately home, which comes alive at December with its Christmas Adventure. Enjoy the outdoor ice rink, explore the interactive enchanted forest or lose yourself in the snowflake maze.

Again, you can enjoy traditional Christmas fun with a selection of market stalls selling decorations and presents ideas for all ages and fun fair ground rides. Warm up with a mug of tea in one of the cafes or buy your Christmas tree from the selection of home grown pines.

Don’t forget the big man himself; Santa will be making appearances around the city throughout the festive period and will be more than happy to hear your Christmas wishes.

There are also Christmas River cruises available, with a traditional Christmas dinner provided, along with Santa giving gifts to all those on board the boat down the river Ouse.

The National Rail Museum is home to Santa’s Christmas workshop, where you can also take a train ride with Santa himself.

In this video Julia, one of our Partners, shows how to wrap a selection of presents using fabric. Fabric is a great alternative to paper gift wrap, and with various ribbons and trims from the Haberdashery department in our shops, you can give your presents a lovely personal touch. It’s easy to work with, and because it’s re-usable, it means no more bags of discarded Christmas paper, making it a cost effective, eco-friendly option too.

The Christmas holiday season is our favorite time of year at the Anglotopia offices and nothing makes the season better than a good British holiday movie. The problem is that there aren’t that many – but we’ve put together our list of favorite British Christmas movies.

Love Actually

When we surveyed our Anglophile friends and family – this movie was pretty much at the top of everyone’s list. We love this movie too – it’s the perfect Christmas movie. The multiple stories, interesting characters and seeing Britain at Christmas make this an enjoyable movie every year. It also provides a fun insight into British Christmas traditions like the annual Christmas party, Christmas pagents and more.

Bridget Jones

The first Bridget Jones movie is framed through Christmas at the beginning and at the end. Bridget may have her foibles but this film undeniably fun and we look forward to watching it every year.

Muppet Christmas Carol

While this is not strictly a British movie – it’s one of our favorites. What’s better than Michael Caine as Scrooge? It’s by far one of our favorite adaptations of A Christmas Carol.

About a Boy

Christmas is tangentially involved in this film and while the subject matter can be quite dark – it’s a good movie worth watching.

The Lion in Winter

Nothing says British Christmas like a historical movie about a King of England spending Christmas at his French chateau played expertly by a classic British cast.

Millions

This movie didn’t get a lot of love when it came out – but it’s a fun one. The plot imagines a future where Britain is joining the Euro (which seemed possible when it was made, not so much now!) and what happens when a little boy finds a bag filled with millions of Pounds as the answer to his prayers. This movie was directed by Danny Boyle and features James Nesbitt as the father.

Scrooge – Albert Finney

Really any setting of ‘A Christmas Carol’ is worth watching but our opinion is that the one with Albert Finney is the best.

The Holiday

I’m not a big fan of this movie – I can’t stand Cameron Diaz – but the plot is fun and takes places in the two weeks around Christmas. So, there’s plenty of lovely scenery of the English countryside with plenty of Jude Law to look at as well.

A Child’s Christmas in Wales

I saw this movie once when I was a kid and recently rediscovered it – it’s a great exploration of Christmas during the ‘olden times’ featuring traditions, songs and more. It’s a classic!

Anglotopia reader Kimberly Pilkington was kind enough to send us her recipe for Christmas Mince Pies.

Mince meat pie filling

6oz (175g) raisins
4oz (110g) sultanas
10oz (275g) currants
4oz (110g) mixed candied peel, finely chopped
6oz (175g) shredded beef suet
1/2 lb. (250g) soft, dark brown sugar
2 1/2 tsp mixed spice (mix together: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, mace, ginger, cloves…in the US it’s called pumpkin pie spice)
the juice of one lemon and the grated zest
the juice of one orange and the grated zest
1 Bramley apple, cored and finely chopped (no need to peel!)
2 Tbsp. brandy

Usually this should marinate for 2 days, but you can use it immediately too…taste very good.

Use a simple pie crust or make mincemeat tarts.

Mince Pie Crust Recipe

Ingredients
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, chilled and diced
1/2 cup ice water

Directions

1. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Split dough in half to form 2 balls. Wrap each in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours. (This can be done the day before, too).
2. Roll dough out to fit a 9 inch pie plate. Place crust in pie plate. Press the dough evenly into the bottom and sides of the pie plate. Roll out the top crust.
3. Fill pie with mince meat filling. Place top crust on and seal edges. Crimp edges. Make a slice in the top crust for steam to escape. Bake as directed.

Optional: You may use a beaten egg yolk as a wash on the top crust. It comes out quite nicely.

Once you’re done preparing the pie crust, add the filling. Heat oven to 350 degrees/gas 6. Bake until golden, 55-60 mins.

That’s it!

Thanks so much Kimberly!

Like many of us, the Royal Family will gather together around a trimmed tree this Christmas and pause to reflect upon the passing year. The royals also celebrate the season, like many families, with traditions that have been passed down through the years.

Let’s take a look at some of the Royal traditions at Christmas:

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, also known as Queen Victoria’s husband, was the first to really get things rolling in the Royal Family. The Prince Consort introduced the Christmas tree, a German tradition, a custom that soon spread throughout England.

Today, the Royal Family spend Christmas at Sandringham, the Norfolk estate acquired in 1866 by the Queen’s great-grandfather, Edward VII. Sandringham quickly became a part of the family’s holiday traditions.

The Queen arrives at Sandringham for Christmas and works there until February (when she’s not in residence, the house is open to the public). It is at Sandringham that the Royal Family partake of their favorite outdoor pursuit – grouse shooting.

The Queen’s great-grandfather, as Prince of Wales, absolutely loved the outdoors and shooting was a passion. It’s because of Edward that Sandringham developed its own timeframe, aptly named “Sandringham Time”. Edward set the all the clocks a half an hour later in order to obtain the most time from the waning winter light so that he could shoot.

Edward’s son, George V, maintained Sandringham Time even during his own reign. This unique tradition ended during the brief reign of his controversial grandson and namesake, Edward VIII.

The Queen and Prince Philip, along with their children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren, all attend the annual Christmas Day church service at a small chapel within the estate. Afterwards, they partake of Christmas lunch and break open crackers filled with paper hats and jokes.

Later in the afternoon, the royals sit down to watch Her Majesty’s televised Christmas message to the nation. This particular tradition began in 1932 with her grandfather, George V. The king broadcast his Christmas address via radio from a room in Sandringham, and the tradition lives on today. The Queen made history of her own when she delivered her first televised Christmas message in 1957 from the library at Sandringham.

This year, the Royal Family celebrate Christmas with new members of the team – the new Duchess of Cambridge and her sister, Pippa.

The former Kate Middleton, who married Prince William last April, is spending her first Christmas at Sandringham. Reports say that her younger sister Pippa (Philippa) is joining her.

Happy Christmas (and Frohe Weihnachten)!

Edinburgh is known as the UK’s Festival City, and for good reason. Nowhere in the United Kingdom can you find as many parties per annum as in Edinburgh. And if Edinburgh is the place to go for a party, the best time to go is obviously during the festive holiday season. So if you’re one of the intelligent fun-seekers who’s arranged — or is considering — a trip to Auld Reekie this Christmas, congratulations! You’ve made a great choice.

There’s so much to experience in Edinburgh during the holiday season. From the Princes Street Gardens to Usher hall; from the expansive Edinburgh Castle to the still pretty expansive Ghillie-Dhu, parties and occasions abound. Here’s a quick breakdown of five of the top places you should make sure to visit whilst in Edinburgh for the holidays:

The Princes Street Gardens: Edinburgh’s Christmas Festival

Every year on November 4th, the party starts and you won’t see the end of it until after the New Year. The Christmas Lights are lit in the Princes Street Gardens on the evening of the 4th, and thus commences the fun. For the rest of the year, the Gardens will be devoted to a massive holiday extravaganza that includes the Edinburgh Wheel, Winter Wonderland, the Great Scottish Santa Run, and dozens of other events and attractions.

Usher Hall: Carols by Candlelight

There’s a certain irreverence that is brought about by the flashing lights and glitz of the festival side of Christmas celebrations. If you’re looking for something a little more sacred and a little less commercial, head over to Usher Hall on December 20th for an awe-inspiring show. The show includes both symphonic classics from Bach and Mozart and a beautiful, solemnly joyful rendition of several Christmastime classics.

Edinburgh Castle: Christmas Lunch

From December 8th through the 23rd, you can come to Edinburgh Castle and, for the cost of lunch in a typical restaurant, enjoy some of the finest catered food the Festival City has to offer. From the oven-roasted winter vegetable tart to the Drambuie pannacotta with caramelised orange and toffee sauce, the food is a match for the beauty and grandeur of the castle itself. (Speaking of which, entrance to the castle is free with lunch, so plan to stick around and tour a while!)

The Ghillie-Dhu: Hogmanay Hoolie

The Ghillie-Dhu was once a pub with some live entertainment, but has exploded in popularity (and quality) in the past few years. This year, for Hogmanay (that’s New Year’s for you visitors), the Ghillie-Dhu is putting on a huge party. Whiskey cocktails hit the tables at 7:30, but the party doesn’t stop until the wee hours of 2012.

The Christmas Markets

Studding the landscape of Edinburgh, the Christmas Markets are enjoying an incredible resurgence. Once outlawed by Oliver Cromwell during the days of the English Commonwealth in the mid-1600s, they’ve since made a huge comeback and today they form a significant part of the Edinburgh Christmas scene. Traditionally stocked with goods from afar — such as Bavarian, French, and even Turkish — these little shops bring huge holiday spirit to the streets of the city.

Of course, this is just skimming the cream off of the huge vat of holiday season fun that Edinburgh offers its guests. There’s so much to see and do in Scotland’s capital during the holidays, the only way to really understand it is to come and see for yourself!

Too few Londoners realise that festive preparations don’t need to involve the crowds of Oxford Street – or that in less time than it takes many to commute to work, city dwellers could be enjoying a treasure trove of undiscovered Christmas gems – just 40 minutes from London. Whether it’s choosing a living Christmas tree, buying handmade gifts, avoiding the garish high-street lights and star-gazing instead, or exploring the frosty English landscape on Boxing Day – a new website www.our-land.co.uk– is packed with inspiring ideas from the South East, helping ensure the planning and aftermath is as much fun as the day itself.

Before Christmas…

Best place to buy a living Christmas tree

Kent Downs

Where: Chilham Shop (http://www.chilhamshop.co.uk)

Peter Higgs has been growing Christmas trees for the past 25 years and offers a tree for all – from small potted varieties, perfect for apartment living – through to family sized trees to accommodate piles of presents.

While you’re there: The tea room in neighbouring Bagham Barn sells a wide variety of antiques and quirky gifts.

Getting there: Charing Cross to Chilham is 90 minutes by train (or the same by car, CT4 8DX)

Make a weekend of it: Relax on a family-run farm, which has created ponds and conserved fruit bearing hedge rows so you will be surrounded by wildlife, including wild ducks, owls, deer, and badgers:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7407/kent-downs-bed-and-breakfast-farmstay

New Forest

Where: New Park, Brockenhurst (www.forestry.gov.uk/christmas)

Choose a real Christmas tree from sustainably managed forests where each purchase contributes towards the management of ancient woodland.

While you’re there: The New Forest is renowned for its heathlands and forests so enjoy a brisk winter walk.

Getting there: London Waterloo to Brockenhurst is 90 minutes by train (or the same by car SO42 7QH).

Make a weekend of it: Stay in Daisybank, a boutique B&B, nestled in the heart of the New Forest – the interior design of this B&B has incorporated local artists and craftsmen throughout:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7040/brockenhurst-bed-and-breakfast

Best Christmas lights (ie best place to see the stars)

South Downs

Where: Black Down, Sussex

Instead of the glitz and sparkle of London’s high streets, escape to the highest point of the South Downs, where the sweeping skies of Black Down make it the perfect spot for star-gazing.

While you’re there: Stop for real ale and home-cooked, locally sourced food at The Mill Tavern in Shottermill.

Closest train station: Haslemere (around 50 mins from London Waterloo)

Make a weekend of it: Have a go at the South Downs Way by bike:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/holiday/7014/south-downs-mountain-bike-holiday

New Forest

Where: Bolton’s Bench (www.forestry.gov.uk)

Bolton’s Bench is named after the Duke of Bolton, who held the office of Master Keeper of Burley Baliwick throughout the eighteenth century. Walk to the top of the hill to watch the sun go down and see the stars.

While you’re there: Head on to The Drift Inn next to the famous Beaulieu Road Salesyard where the commoners sell their New Forest ponies.

Closest train station: Brockenhurst (around 90 minutes from London Waterloo)

Make a weekend of it: Explore the wintery countryside by going away for a walking weekend, with overnight stays in B&Bs that help conserve the landscape:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/holiday/6927/new-forest-walking-short-break

Best place to meet Santa

Isle of Wight

Where: Haven Street Steam Railway (http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/special-events/december)

Enjoy a festive family day out with steam trains, Santa, mince pies, fresh air and beautiful countryside.

While you’re there: The White Hart Pub has an excellent reputation for wonderful hearty seasonal food, friendly service and good cheer.

Getting there: Two and a half hours from central London by car and ferry, but worth the journey!

Make a weekend of it: Stay on a working farm and pick up some unique products from the Garlic Farm Shop. The family has supported the local community for over 50 years, starting up the Garlic Festival as a fundraising vehicle for the school, church, pub, organisations and businesses:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7211/isle-of-wight-self-catering-farm-house

Surrey Hills

Where: Bocketts Farm, Bookham (www.bockettsfarm.co.uk)

Create the magic of Christmas in a more environmentally friendly way than travelling to the North Pole by hopping on board the Santa Express trailer for a short trip to his magical haybarn workshop.

While you’re there: Enjoy a bite to eat in the well stocked and cosy café.

Closest train station: Leatherhead (around 40 minutes from London Waterloo)

Make a weekend of it: After treating the kids to a day with Santa stay at Denbies Farmhouse nearby – an international award-winning wine estate. Denbies’ environmental practices encourage a wide diversity of flora and fauna that would have been under-threat with more intense agricultural use:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7037/dorking-bed-breakfast

Best place to find quirky Christmas gifts

High Weald

Where: Wilderness Wood (http://www.wildernesswood.co.uk)

A family run woodland attraction in a 62-acre woodland, with a ‘slow food’ café, ethical Christmas presents and living Christmas trees.

While you’re there: Visit the historic village of Mayfield where the high street boasts The Darkhorse Gallery featuring local artists and ‘Jasons’ for local food and drinks.

Closest train station: Buxted (around 60 mins from London Bridge)

Make a weekend of it: Stay in a self-catering farm-stay which dates from the fourteenth century, in individually designed stables overlooking the owners’ wildflower meadow and woodland:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7527/high-weald-self-catering-farmstay

North Wessex Downs

Where: Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza (http://www.visitnewbury.org)

Start your weekend on Friday 9 December as Hungerford goes back in time to Christmas past. Enjoy fairground rides, Punch and Judy and roasted chestnuts, whilst Christmas shopping in antique stores, catering for every budget.

While you’re there: Take a stroll along the Kennet and Avon canal, five minutes from the high street.

Closest train station: Hungerford (around 60 minutes from London Paddington)

Make a weekend of it: Stay overnight at The Bear Hotel, who support the North Wessex Farmland Bird project:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7306/hungerford-hotel-accommmodation-berkshire

Christmas week / New Year…

Best Boxing Day walk or cycle

Chilterns

Where: Watlington Hill or Aston Rowant Nature Reserve (http://www.chilternsaonb.org/about-chilterns/red-kites/where-to-see-red-kites.html)

Watch the red kites as the low winter sun lights up their beautiful russet feathers.

While you’re there: Pop into the Granary delicatessen in Watlington for local breads, cheeses and wines.

Closest train station: Henley on Thames (around 60 minutes from London Paddington)

Make a weekend of it: Stay in the four star Little Gables B&B, just a short walk from Wallingford-on-Thames, the oldest town in the country. Here, most of the food waste is fed to the chickens, who provide your eggs every day!

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7251/chilterns-bed-and-breakfast-accommodation

Cotswolds

Where: Northleach (http://www.escapetothecotswolds.org.uk/userfiles/file/cycling-routes/northleach4.pdf)

The frosty, hard cycling tracks are perfect for a winter’s ride without getting covered in mud! Cycle through beautiful scenery and secret valleys.

While you’re there: Check out the wide range of cafes and pubs in Northleach.

Closest train station: Moreton-in-Marsh (around 90 minutes from Paddington)

Make a weekend of it: Spend the night in a fifteenth century farmhouse B&B, within walking distance of plenty of places to eat:

http://www.our-land.co.uk/accommodation/7456/cotswolds-bed-and-breakfast

Best New Year’s Day Bloody Mary

South Downs

Where: Bills Cafe Restaurant and Store, Lewes, East Sussex http://www.bills-website.co.uk

Bill’s is a unique cafe selling organic fruit and vegetables, herbs, flowers, plants and hampers. They also serve one of the best Bloody Marys around.

Closest train station: Lewes (around 60 minutes from London Victoria)

Make a weekend of it: Spend the days walking or cycling in the South Downs while staying in flint and oak holiday cottages in the village of East Dean:

High Weald

Where: The Bell in Ticehurst (www.thebellinticehurst.com )

Recently renovated with original beams, The Bell is gaining a reputation for quality, seasonal food and excellent English wines.

While you’re there: Visit Batemans, Rudyard Kipling’s home. Great walks from the property through the High Weald countryside.

Closest train station: Stonegate (just over 60 minutes from London Charing Cross)

Make a weekend of it: Stay in luxury tree houses, with eco-friendly heating and hot water:

Visit www.our-land.co.uk for inspiration on how to make the most of winter in the South East.

To qualify as partners, businesses must agree to the ‘Our Land Promise’ www.our-land.co.uk/copy/promise to offer authentic experiences that celebrate the cultural and natural history of the region, and they must demonstrate to visitors their commitment to the environment.

We’re still quite a few days from the Downton Abbey Christmas Special but we thought we’d roundup everything we know about it for those that are interested.

If you have haven’t seen Series 2 of Downton Abbey (those in the USA will have to wait) will want to avoid reading this.

First off ITV has announced when the Christmas special will air on Christmas Day at 9:00pm and will air for 90 minutes (with commercials). We believe the Christmas special will be packaged with the US airing as just another episode so American audiences will see it at the end of season two airing on PBS.

ITV has also released some plot details:

Christmas episode of the acclaimed period drama series starring Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern. It is Christmas 1919, and Downton Abbey is hosting a lavish Christmas party, yet despite it being the season of goodwill, tensions are rife and the arrest of Bates (Brendan Coyle, pictured centre) has cast a shadow over the festivities. Will he be a condemned man or will he be found innocent in time to dance with his new wife at the annual servants’ ball? Mary (Michelle Dockery) has to consider her future with Sir Richard Carlisle (Iain Glen) following a contretemps at the shooting party and Violet (Smith) has concerns about Rosamund (Samantha Bond), whose new suitor – the dashing but raffish Lord Hepworth (Nigel Havers) – is not all he seems. Since the very first episode pulled in an audience of over nine million in September 2010, Downton Abbey has rapidly established itself as a broadcasting phenomenon. It is the most successful British costume drama since Brideshead Revisited in 1981 and has won numerous awards, including a Bafta for director Brian Percival and a Broadcasting Press Guild Award for writer and creator Julian Fellowes.

Sounds like a wonderful special! We can’t wait!

Simple steps to decorate a Christmas tree, from adding the lights through to putting the presents around the base. The Christmas tree is without a doubt, the key focal point of the home during the festive season and decorating it forms part of many people’s annual Christmas traditions.

Last year, John Lewis came up with 5 Christmas themes that’ll help you create the desired look for your tree. There’s cool, crisp Frosty Morning, contemporary Geometry, bright Winter Festival and more traditional colour schemes such as Classic and Nordic. So whether you’re changing the whole look of your tree, or just refreshing it with new lights and a few baubles, there’s lots to choose from.

The UK at Christmas is a wonderful collision of sentiment and shopping. For a few brief weeks streets are garlanded with icicles, bells and holly while shop windows show snowy scenes that are often wildly at odds with the weather on the pavement.

Step back in time

A couple of hours from London by train is one of England’s best-kept secrets, the medieval Cathedral city of Norwich. Enclosed by a city wall encompassing an area greater than that of the city of London Norwich is the most complete medieval city in England. At this time of year it can feel like you’re walking through a Christmas card. The cobbled streets and twisting lanes open out onto an enormous market square, the largest in Europe. If you fancy being surrounded by history this Christmas, lose yourself in Norwich.

Cheer the Hero

Wherever you are in the UK this Christmas you won’t be far from a Pantomime. These traditional Christmas shows are a perfect introduction for small children to the wonders of the theatre. The stories are old, the jokes are old, the characters are old but the laughter is entirely of the moment. Expect to groan at terrible puns and find yourself caught up in choruses of “Oh No He Isn’t….Oh Yes He Is….”

Burn a Clock in Brighton

Brighton, on England’s south coast, is a resort town combining raffish elegance, Bohemian sensibility and a leavening of humour. The annual Santa dash which features over a hundred Santa Claus’s dashing for charity takes place on December 10th. As the old year ends paper lanterns are carried through the town and burned on the beach in an event known as the Burning of the Clocks. Expect the eccentric, the artistic and the strange.

Cardiff Calennig

In a Child’s Christmas in Wales, Dylan Thomas speaks of snow as white as Lapland. To discover the truth of his words visit Cardiff this Christmas. The Russian State Ballet are performing The Nutcracker at St David’s Hall, while at the Millennium centre there are performances of A Christmas Carol and Oliver. And, because this is Wales, seek out the sound of a real Welsh choir before heading down to the ice-rink to celebrate Calennig, the traditional year-end celebration in Cardiff.

Join the Tartan Army

Glasgow may not possess the stately splendour of Edinburgh but more than makes up for it by the friendliness of its people. Christmas north of the border is certainly celebrated but the big event in the Scottish calendar is Hogmanay, the turning of the year. As 2011 is ushered out and 2012 arrives, expect to be caught up in a chorus of Auld Lang Syne and then swept away on a tide of traditional Scottish music. George Square is spectacularly lit for the duration. Expect fireworks.

Wherever you are in the UK this Christmas you won’t be far from tradition. Pubs will be serving traditional toddies, churches will host midnight mass and town squares be overlooked by Christmas trees. Will it snow? If it does it will be beautiful. Chaotic perhaps, but beautiful. Happy Christmas.

The BBC has announced the air date for the Top Gear Christmas special – it will air on December 28th at 8pm on BBC2 and BBCHD. It will be a 90 minute long show.

No word yet as to when it will air in the USA – but will probably be next year sometime.

One of the Top Gear producers released some tidbits from the special on the official Top Gear Blog – here’s an excerpt:

The backbone of the Top Gear specials has always been the toughness of the challenge, from the frozen North Pole to the desolate salt pans of Botswana to the jungles and mountains of South America. But, this year, we’ve taken on our biggest challenge of all: sorting out the British economy.

Let me explain. A few months ago, Mr Cameron said our nation must become a favoured trading partner of India: currently, we do more business with Ireland than with this country of 1.2 billion people. Top Gear, we thought, could help solve this problem with a trade mission, flying the flag for UKPLC. Our plan was to drive across India, drumming up interest in British goods, advertising the peerless standards of British skills, British nous, British Britishness. We would make the Indians think: “No, we shall not buy mayonnaise from Belgium, but Angel Delight and Kendal Mint Cake from the British.”

So we thought we’d spend a bit more and buy three cars that represented the best of British. With their budget of seven grand each, Jeremy and Richard excelled themselves, Jezza picking up a 1995 Jaguar XJS 4.0-litre – the Celebration edition, no less – and Richard buying a tidy Mini Cooper.

But James, in his OCD idiocy, decided he wanted a Rolls-Royce. Unfortunately, the only Rolls-Royce you can buy for seven grand is a 1976 Silver Shadow…

Source.

Sounds awesome – we can’t wait!

All over the UK people love to celebrate Christmas. In fact Britain is the birthplace of some of the best international customs of this winter festival. Every region of the UK has its own special traditions, and each nation has contributed to the way Christmas is celebrated across the world. Here are a selection of the some of the secret customs, as well as the most popular traditions, born in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

During the Reformation in England and Scotland, Christmas was effectively outlawed. It wasn’t until the start of the Victorian era in 1837 that the celebration of this festival came back into fashion. The Victorians not only embraced traditions from Europe – like Santa Claus and the Christmas tree – but also invented many of their own.

It wasn’t until the Victorians that the Christmas cracker first appeared (originally a simple, paper-wrapped sweet), or that the English started to send Christmas cards at the introduction of the Penny Post. It was as late as 1843, when Charles Dickens “Christmas Carol” was published, that Christmas became the traditional time for giving.

Charity isn’t the only reason that the rich didn’t celebrate alone at this time of year. The industrial revolution meant that gifts such as dolls and games could be made by machine, and so were much more affordable. The festival was also embraced by the working classes as during this time it became a national two day holiday when rural people working in the cities could return home to their families.

A Christmas in Wales may appear similar to one in England. The Welsh certainly love the trimmings – but they’ve always added a few of their own. One tradition still carried out in many homes across the country is the Christmas Eve Taffy making. To while away the night before Christmas, families melt a mixture of sugar, water, butter and lemon over their fires to make Taffy. The toffee mixture is then dropped into icy water where its swirling shape represents the initials of the future loves of any single household members.

Another great custom of the Welsh is singing. So it wouldn’t be a Welsh Christmas without Plygain – the singing of carols in the dark hours of the morning to welcome in Christmas day. Men traditionally meet in the church where they sing unaccompanied harmonies for up to three hours as they bring in the Christmas festival.

All across the UK the use of Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe as Christmas decorations has been a tradition to ward off evil spirits and signal the coming spring. Ireland was the birthplace of the traditional holly wreath placed on the front door. This was a custom developed by the poor as there was no cost to using nature’s plentiful winter offerings as decorations.

Ireland was also the country that introduced the custom of placing a candle in the window on Christmas Eve to light the way for strangers. This candle is only supposed to be extinguished by a girl named Mary, an indication of the origins of this tradition – to guide Mary and Joseph to a welcoming home. The table was also laid with bread and milk to feed the couple – although these days this custom has become a reward for Father Christmas’s hard work.

Scotland is the one country that has very different Christmas traditions to the rest of the UK. This is because, unlike England, the Victorian revival of the festival didn’t reach to Scotland. Only 40 years ago state workers did not get a holiday on Christmas day and it’s only in the last 30 years that Boxing Day has become a national holiday. To make up for this the Scots have traditionally done the best part of their Christmas celebrating on Hogmanay, better known as New Year’s Eve.

Along with torch lit processions and fireworks, there are many age-old traditions of Hogmanay that are still practised today. It is custom to clean the house during the day on New Year’s Eve to prepare for the year ahead. Internationally we also celebrate this festival in traditional Scottish style with the making of New Year’s resolutions and by singing Auld Lang Syne.

Wherever you go in the UK you will find all kinds of different Christmas traditions. Some will be customs that are followed over the world, while others will be the secrets of their own nation. Whatever you discover, these all go towards making the celebration of Christmas a wonderful and exciting tradition across the UK.
