Hitchhiker’s fans rejoice! Arthur Dent is headed for the stage with the original BBC cast.

According to the BBC:

Original cast members of the TV and radio versions of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy are reuniting for a new stage production.

The show will star Simon Jones, who played lead character Arthur Dent in the TV and radio versions of Douglas Adams’s sci-fi comedy.

It will be staged as a radio recording, which will be made available for download after the tour.

The show’s first performance will be at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal on 8 June.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show – Live! will play at a host of other venues throughout June and July, ending at the Edinburgh Playhouse on 21 July.

The production has been adapted and written by its director Dirk Maggs, who was behind Hitchhiker’s 2003 revival on radio.

Source.

So the question is – how many fans will show up in their dressing gowns with a towel slung over their shoulder?

I love British radio. I think they have a legacy of presenting narrative stories in an interesting and compelling wya tha tis second to none. Somehow, growing up as a nation with radio has affected the UK culturally and allowed it to make great radio pf all sorts.

I also think that the Brits do a swell job of presenting music programming. As a radio host and DJ I depend on a lot of UK music shows and the channels of the BBC to get the latest new music and information on stuff I know I will like. Again, the Brits do this better then anyone.

Thankfully online streaming and now Spotify has made it possible for us, over here, to hear the latest UK offerings.

With that in mind I was thrilled to discover this compelling and thorough piece by Widgett Walls for needcoffee.com on British Radio Shows You Should Be Listening To.

Exciting news today for audiophiles and fans of the BBC. The BBC is working on digiziting it’s entire historical radio archive so that it can be placed online in a new ‘Audiopedia.’

According to the Telegraph:

The service is being developed for launch “within the next 12 months”, said Tim Davie, director of BBC Audio and Music. “Audiopedia”, its working title, may yet become its formal name, he added.

“The BBC is working on how best to present Audiopedia at the moment but most people will probably access the new on demand content via other pieces of related content they are already listening to across the BBC website,” he explained.

The website will represent the biggest release of BBC programming on demand since the iPlayer was introduced in 2007.

As well as searching and listening to the archive, “Audiopedia” users will be able to share programmes with their friends.

The BBC is in the process of digitizing its audio and TV archives. Currently around 20 hours a week of Radio 4 archive is being added to “Audiopedia”. Davie the process was being run at a “small cost to the tax payer” and that the website will be “porous” to other broadcasters’ content.

As the Russian tanks encircle Stalingrad, the commanders of the German 6th Army realise that the end is in sight but Hitler will not permit a surrender.
Here are episodes 10 and 11 of the David Tennant starring Radio 4 Drama Life and Fate.

Krymov denounces Grekov as an enemy of the state. After a session of speeches marking the 25th anniversary of the Revolution at which he is cold-shouldered by his colleagues, he slips out to find Stepan Spiridonov at the Central Power Station. He recalls the heady days of 1917 and then attending Lenin’s funeral and compares those ideals with the days of the show-trials. Krymov is played by David Tennant.

Krymov is arrested and sent to the KGB headquarters in the Lubyanka. Zhenya returns to Moscow to support him; she stays with Viktor and Lyuda and begins the process of daily queuing for information about Krymov: will she be allowed to deliver a parcel for him? While he undergoes interrogation and refuses to sign a confession, he wonders if it was she who betrayed him. Featuring Kenneth Branagh and David Tennant.

Kenneth Branagh and David Tennant introduce the characters they play in the upcoming BBC 4 Radio Play: Life and Fate (BBC Radio 4).

Branagh and Tennant star in an eight-hour dramatisation of Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman. Thirteen episodes will be broadcast from 18 to 25 September on Radio 4. This epic masterpiece, centred around the bloody battle of Stalingrad, charts the fate of both a nation and a family in the turmoil of war. Completed in 1960, the novel was deemed so dangerous by the KGB that the book itself was arrested.

In this first clip, they introduce the characters.

In this second clip they’re asked what makes radio drama special? Kenneth Branagh and David Tennant on why actors continue to come back to the medium.

SiriusXM stirred a hornet’s nest last week when BBC Radio 1 mysteriously disappeared from their network, enraging thousands of customers who got the service just to listen to the station.

Petitions were started, Facebook support pages were started – it was beautiful to see Anglophiles mobilize so quickly to save something they loved.

Well, today comes news that SiriusXM is backpedaling and will re-instate BBC Radio 1 to their network starting Friday, August 19th.

The press releases announcing it is typical corporate speak and doesn’t say anything about the station being withdrawn or the movement to bring it back. It simply says it will start Friday – as if it was on the network for the first time.

Here’s the release:

NEW YORK, Aug. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ – Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) announced today BBC Radio 1 will be available to its listeners on SiriusXM Internet Radio beginning Friday, August 19 at 5:00 pm ET as part of a new multi-platform agreement with the BBC that brings subscribers additional concert performances from the BBCvault.

BBC Radio 1 will be time-shifted by 5 hours so Americans can enjoy the channel’s lineup as it was intended, with Chris Moyles in the morning, Scott Mills in the afternoon, and Pete Tong on Friday nights.

In addition to being available online, BBC Radio 1 programming will be broadcast on satellite radio at various times throughout the year coinciding with major events in BBC Radio 1′s programming schedule.

SiriusXM will also broadcast concerts from the extensive and wide-ranging BBC Radio archive, many of which are not commercially available. SiriusXM listeners will hear classic performances by Led Zeppelin, U2, Lady Gaga, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Duran Duran, Queen, The Cure and other music legends. The concerts will air on various SiriusXM music channels.

“BBC Radio 1 has built a loyal and passionate following across North America. We’re delighted that we are able to continue and extend our relationship with SiriusXM, to bring BBC Radio 1 and our catalogue of classic BBC concerts to the North American audience,” said Salim Mukaddam, Head of Radio, BBC Worldwide.

“We are happy to continue our valuable relationship with the BBC and thrilled to now be able to give our listeners access to BBC Radio 1 programming on our expanding internet platform as well as deliver special concert performances to a variety of our satellite radio channels. The additional programming ranges from legendary music icons to today’s rising stars whose exclusive performances for the BBC are featured regularly,” said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer, SiriusXM.

BBC Radio 1 is the U.K.’s music station that plays the best new music, live studio sessions, concerts and music news. The channel also features interviews with a distinctive British flair, extensive coverage of music events from around the world and exclusive live performances by some of the biggest artists on the international scene.

So, there you have it, BBC Radio 1 will return to Sirius XM on Friday. Well done, Anglophiles, well done.

UPDATE: It appears I misread that – they’re only brining it back to the Internet Player. Absurd to make people pay for something they can already get for free from the BBC website.

The news spreading around fellow Anglophiles today is that Sirius XM has dropped the BBC Radio 1 feed without explanation.

Honestly, I didn’t even know they had BBC Radio 1!

According to Digital Home:

Without any notice to listeners, subscription satellite radio provider Sirius XM has dropped BBC Radio 1 from its line-up as of 12:00 AM this morning.

BBC Radio 1 is a national radio station operated out of the U.K. by the British Broadcasting Corporation which broadcasts current popular music and chart hits throughout the day.

The Sirius simulcasts were time shifted five hours to allow U.S. and Canadian listeners in the Eastern Time Zone to hear Radio 1 at the same time of day as UK listeners.

The Sirius XM website makes no mention of why the station was dropped. The site simply says the BBC Radio 1 is no longer and available and directs listeners to listen for pop hits on SiriusXM Hits 1 (Ch. 2) or 20 on 20 (Ch. 3).

Source.

It’s still showing up on their channel list – they must not update it often.

The BBC World Service is still available.

David Tennant recently starred in a Saturday Play on BBC Radio Four called The Purple Land. And we have it here for you to listen to.

Here’s what it’s about:

Published in 1885, The Purple Land was the first novel of William Henry Hudson, author of Green Mansions. The Anglo-Argentine naturalist distinguished himself both as one of the finest craftsmen of prose in English literature and as a thinker on ecological matters far ahead of his time.

In Davies’ hands this ‘road novel’ becomes a fast paced romp in the tradition of Tom Jones, with a dash of Don Quixote for good measure.

It is an exuberant, wryly comic account of a young Englishman’s imprudent adventures, set against a background of political strife in nineteenth-century South America. Eloping with an Argentine girl, young Richard Lamb makes an implacable enemy of his teenage bride’s father. Leaving her behind, he goes ignorantly forth into the interior of the country to seek his fortune.

Whilst doing so he learns to hunt, ride, herd, love – even kill. On his way to becoming a man.

Hemingway alluded to this book in his masterpiece “The Sun Also Rises”, claiming that “The Purple Land” is ‘dangerous reading if read too late in life’.

Hopefully – it doesn’t make for dangerous listening!

[picappgallerysingle id="9675469"]It’s far too rare of a treat to see Stephen Fry’s work in America, and unless they happen to be Bones fans, most younger Americans may know him far more for his Twitter account than his excellent acting skills. So it was a wonderful treat to find out from the man himself on BBC Radio 5 Saturday that he’s been cast in Guy Ritchie’s followup to his 2009 Sherlock Holmes film.

Not only is Fry going to be in the movie, but he’s terrifically cast as Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother, who appears in four of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. Moviefone described Mycroft as “sort of a fatter, lazier version of Holmes, armed with powers of deduction that may surpass even those of his younger sibling’s, but utterly unwilling to do the legwork to put them to any practical use.” Sherlock will be played, as he was in Ritchie’s original film, by Robert Downey, Jr., with Jude Law as John Watson.

Fry, who is currently busy promoting his new book “The Fry Chronicles” and his recent UK “standup” appearances at Royal Albert Hall and elsewhere discussing topics suggested by people on Twitter, unfavorably compared Mycroft to his previous portrayal of Oscar Wilde. But it will be wonderful to see him matching his undeniable verbal jousting skills with Downey and Law as well playing a role based on a true British classic.

Sherlock Holmes 2 is currently due in theaters next Christmas. In the meantime, to capitalize on Fry’s impending big screen return in the states, it would be a great time for BBC America to actually pull Black Adder out for a proper run. Just a suggestion.

The face of BBC on Friday night will continue to be a very familiar one, on both sides of the pond.

Graham Norton has been tapped to take over the BBC1 time slot currently held by “Friday Night With Jonathan Ross,” which ends its run on Friday.

“In all likelihood, when [Norton's] show returns later in the year it will play in the Friday night slot,” a BBC spokesperson told The Independent.

Ross was signed to front a new chatshow on ITV late next year after a very public falling out with the BBC over a phone call made by himself and Russell Brand on Wossy’s now-former Radio 2 show. Norton will also be taking over the time slot for that show.

Since the move of “The Graham Norton Show” is not expected to happen until October, “Would I Lie To You?” will premiere its fourth series next Friday night (ed: this means that David Mitchell will be on the radio and telly at least three times a week for awhile, which makes the writer very happy, but that’s probably for another column.) “Live In The Apollo” will also fill in until Norton’s move.

Since both Norton and Ross have been a big part of BBC America’s weekend primetime programming, this still means that they will have a slot to fill.

They’ll also be providing us extensive coverage during the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. It’s going to be an exciting few months!

We took a few minutes to catch up with the hosts from www.worldfootballdaily.com, which is the only daily English language show exclusively dedicated to football anywhere in the world and is courted by players, managers, general managers and media personalities from the UK and USA, Italy, Spain, Germany, Africa and South America.

World Football Daily calls upon the very best journalists to help make the show the most thorough football experience covering football anywhere in the world. This is reflected in the numbers that the show routinely puts up in countries like Australia, Brazil, India, New Zealand, Canada, Germany and many of the big football nations throughout the world. They are also the only English daily show covering every aspect of the upcoming FIFA World Cup from South Africa, from the play on the pitch, to stories off the pitch.

World Football Daily reaches football fans worldwide that are looking for a deeper and more personal football experience on a daily basis. The show covers all on-field topics from the world’s major football leagues while finely balancing the 24/7 soap opera that is the world game as well as the business side of the game. This subscription based show has already broken new territory on delivering the finest broadcasted football product.

Steven Cohen and Kenny Hassan are both ex-pats and are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the game of football. They both grew up with an avid love for the game. Steven was born in London, England, and after completing school he moved to the US where he joined the army. Cohen started World Soccer Daily, in 2002 with his good friend, Nick Geber. Steven was a life-long Chelsea fan for more than forty years but has since moved to the grand ole team Neutral FC for personal reasons. Kenny was born in Glasgow, Scotland where he grew up supporting the blue side, Rangers FC. Kenny moved to Germany and later to the United States where he has been living the dream for 15 years.

When did you start World Fooball Daily?

World Football Daily started in August 2009 and was the natural progression of what we had built over the previous 7 years with World Soccer Daily which started in 2002.

How do people listen to your show?

People have a couple of options: they can listen live from our own site www.worldfootballdaily.com or they can subscribe to the podcast. Once someone has signed up for a subscription they will show 3 differents assets that they might want: the complete show, the video of the show or simply just the interviews we do. They will click either Itunes or Zune and they are away. Additionally we have a mobile application coming out this week.

Tell us how you both got started in the Football World?

Steven: I started (with a guy called Nick Geber) the original World Soocer Daily, which actually started out as World Soccer Weekly in 2002. I was ata crossroads in my career and rteally wanted to find something that i really wanted to do and so moved forward with creating the first soccer radio show in US history. We built the show up over the course of 7 years and switched from network to network until we settled on Sirius XM but we left there in Augsut 2009 and formed World Football Daily as a subscription based show and the rest as they say is the present.

Kenny: I actually was a listener to the show from the very, very early days trying to listen at the most obscure hours as an Ex-Pat that had found this show that kept me connected with the game back home and it filled a massive void in my days when I wanted/needed my football fix. To have an outlet that had some serious effort, input AND comedy from both Steven and Nick, that, ultimately, was the clincher for myself, as a natural progression I stayed on listening till they got the first gig on Sirius and the first t.v. show in that awful living room set on the Fox network on a Friday evening and from there on in I constantly and I mean, constantly, emailed Steven at the radio show with my analysis of how Michael Essien was playing for Chelsea after most games, then called in, and was known as ‘ Kenny from Long Beach’. Before long, Steven asked on air for some local fans to come in and try and guest host with him when he was flying solo and that as they say, was that. I did my days when asked and soon they turned into weeks and then the partnership grew from there on in.

3 plus years later and we are as popular as ever thanks to a fantastic and loyal following mixed with the best correspondent and mgr/player/guest line-up that any show on the football landscape offers and better than any on a daily basis, one of the keys to our continued success is the fact that we are the only daily English language based broadcast available covering the beautiful game.

Do you have a favorite team?

Steven: I have decided to withhold my support for any one team but I was an avid Chelsea fan for 43 years. I am now as neutral as I could be.

Kenny: Rangers F.C.
I’m a Glasgow boy and have followed that club since the very first day I knew what football was. 40 plus years now. More silverware than any other football club in any domestic league in any country. World record holders.

How will you be covering the world cup?

Well we will watching every game and we will be experiencing the tournament in the same way that our audience experiences which is to say from here in the US. We might be changing the time of the show so that we can do a full and proper show once all the games are concluded every day ut we have not decided on that quite yet.

Do you have a favorite to win Steven and Kenny?

Steven: Spain.

Kenny: Actually, as Scotland failed miserably again to qualify I turned my attention to Chile. Strange for a Scot to be this off the wall, but they play a 3-4-3 system, the ‘W-M’ they call it which is all about attack and for me I really admire the coach Marcelo Bielsa and players like Valdivia,Sanchez,Suazo and Gonzalez…..I know they wont win it, but I really think they will entertain and add to the drama that unfolds every 4 years in our game’s greatest event. If I was forced to bet a few quid, I’ll take Argentina, I’m sure they can do it.

World Football Daily have kindly agreed to give Anglotopia a daily football report, including for the world cup. Stay tuned for further World Cup Updates!

From the David Tennant Website:

David stars in a BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. He plays George Milton opposite Liam Brennan as Lennie Small in the story of two migrant workers in 1930s California whose dream of owning a place of their own is destroyed.

Steinbeck’s seminal novella has been adapted by writer and dramatist Donna Franceschild, who worked with David on BBC2 drama Takin’ Over the Asylum, in which he starred with Ken Stott in 1994

The BBC Reports that Rage Against the Machine has beat out all the other contenders for Christmas Number One with their song Killing in the Name.

There was a movement afoot to unseat the X Factor Winner, which is who usually wins the Christmas Number 1 race, in the last few years at least.

From the BBC:

Their success followed a Facebook campaign designed to prevent another X Factor number one.

One retailer said it was a “truly remarkable outcome – possibly the greatest chart upset ever”.

Speaking on the Radio 1 chart show, Zack de la Rocha from Rage said: “We are very, very ecstatic about being number one.”

He added it was an “incredible organic grassroots campaign”.

“It says more about the spontaneous action taken by young people throughout the UK to topple this very sterile pop monopoly,” he said.

McElderry, 18, praised the campaign, adding: “It’s been exciting to be part of a much-hyped battle and they definitely deserve congratulations.”

There was also charitable motivations behind the win – with fans and Rage Against the Machine pledging to donate the profits to the charity Shelter and Youth Music.
