Anglophile Alerts: Cemetery Junction DVD Giveaway Contest!

We’ve been offered a copy of the movie Cemetary Junction to giveway.

Here’s some details:

From the award-winning team behind the hit series; “The Office”. 70’s England is in full swing as three outcast friends find themselves drinking, joking, fighting and chasing girls, while dreaming of escape from their blue-collar hometown of Cemetery Junction. Freddie (Christian Cooke) is a salesman suddenly thrown onto the fast track when he gains the attention of his boss, Mr. Kendrick (Ralph Fiennes). Torn between a prior life of partying with his friends (Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan) and the promise of a brighter future, life gets more complicated when the bosses daughter becomes the focus of Freddie’s affection. Never Let Me Go Movie Film Trailer

I had no idea this was being made into a movie. Frankly it’s a brave choice to make into a movie. I’ve read the novel and I’m not sure a movie about it will have much mainstream appeal or be an oscar contender.

Still the movie looks interesting and has a great cast of young British actors.

Here’s a synopsis:

In his highly acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day) created a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. In it he posed the fundamental question: What makes us human? Now director Mark Romanek (ONE HOUR PHOTO), writer Alex Garland and DNA Films bring Ishiguro’s hauntingly poignant and emotional story to the screen. Kathy (Oscar® nominee Carey Mulligan, AN EDUCATION), Tommy (Andrew Garfield, BOY A, RED RIDING) and Ruth (Oscar® nominee Keira Knightley, PRIDE & PREJUDICE, ATONEMENT) live in a world and a time that feel familiar to us, but are not quite like anything we know. They spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. When they leave the shelter of the school and the terrible truth of their fate is revealed to them, they must also confront the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart.

First Images from New Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Movie Paul Released

Two of my favorite Brits working in movies right now are Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. They’ve teamed up again – this time for a sci-fi geek themed movie called Paul. Here’s the synopsis from Universal:

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.

For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Collings (Frost).

Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Paul is directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola, from a story by Pegg & Frost. Joining the comedy’s cast are Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, Joe Lo Truglio, John Carroll Lynch, David Koechner and Sigourney Weaver.

Paul will be released March 18th, 2011.

Meryl Streep as the Iron Maiden?

The Huffington Post is reporting that Meryl Streep has expressed an interest in playing Margaret Thatcher in a biopic to be produced to Pathe films in London.

According to the Huffington Post:

Pathe Films says the two-time Academy Award winner has expressed an interest in playing Margaret Thatcher in a new film about Britain’s first female prime minister.

The London-based producer and distributor said Thursday that discussions are under way with Streep’s representatives, but no agreement is in place.

Written by Abi Morgan (“Sex Traffic,” “Brick Lane”) the film is provisionally titled “The Iron Lady.” Pathe says it “tells the story of a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world.”

The director is Phyllida Lloyd, who directed Streep in the Abba musical “Mamma Mia!”

Filming is due to start at the end of the year.

Sounds like a really interesting project. I think she would make a great Thatcher!

First Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer – HP 7 Preview Released

Warner Brothers have released the first theatrical trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows aka Harry Potter 7, the final Harry Potter adventure that’s to be released in two parts starting this November.

This is the first theatrical trailer that played in front of Twilight Eclipse this past weeked. Enjoy!
