Weekly Royal News Roundup 12-01-09: Welcoming Rwanda; Prince Will’s Puppy; St. V’s Keeps Queen

Welcome to December! It’s time again for Christmas crackers, puddings, and the Queen’s Christmas speech.

But what happened over Thanksgiving week? Let’s recap:

William to present Kate with a dog

The Daily Star reports that Prince William will be giving girlfriend Kate Middleton a Chocolate Labrador puppy as a Christmas gift.

The Prince transfers to RAF Valley in Anglesey, North Wales, to train as an air/sea rescue pilot this upcoming year. He will be away from Kate for months. The puppy is seen as a loving gesture as something to remember William by while he’s away.

After this training stint, it is rumored Wills and Kate will make it official and announce their engagement in 2010.

Queen welcomes Rwanda

Her Majesty recently welcomed the African nation of Rwanda into the Commonwealth of nations. It is the 54th member admitted to the organization of mostly former British colonies, with the Queen at its head.

Rwanda, however, has no colonial ties to Britain, unlike its neighbors Zimbabwe and South Africa. Members are eligible for assistance programs and cultural exchanges. Rwanda is not the only country without former ties: Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony, is a member of the Commonwealth.

In other Commonwealth news, the Carribbean country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines decided to keep the Queen as its head of state.

A constitution was drawn up to replace the charter in place since the nation’s independence from Britain in 1979. This proposed constitution would have removed the British monarch as the head of state and created a president nominated by the two political parties.

Newly-merged school opens near Highgrove

On November 30th, the Duchess of Cornwall opened a new school near the Wales’ Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire, England. The Rose Hill Westonbirt Preparatory School, created from the union of two other preparatory schools, is a private independent day school for boys and girls aged three to 13.

The Duchess spent time with the children in art and music lessons, and then proceeded to take a tour of the building. Her Royal Highness attended a performance by the school’s choir thereafter.
