Anglophile Links: Weekly Roundup

Here’s a roundup of the coolest Anglophile related links I’ve built up for the last few weeks. Stuff that is pretty cool, but doesn’t warrant it’s own blog post.

If you ever come across a cool site that you want to mentioned, let me know about it or add it to the Anglophile Link Directory

This Week’s Anglophile Links:

Pictures of an Abandoned London

A brave individual decided to go on a bike ride on Christmas morning in London with his camera. He documented a city that was completely deserted.

A very interesting portrait of a city that is often more crowded than not. It provokes memories of the horror movie “28 Days Later” minus the zombies.

Pretty cool. You can also check out IanVisits’s cool blog.

Wrong Headed Ideas from the Colonies

Mary Dejevsky posits this question in a recent article in the Sunday Indpendent: Why do we always take the wrong ideas from the US?

From the Article:

What is it about American ideas that Britain, and New Labour Britain in particular, finds so seductive? Oh, I know how fertile their think-tank culture is and how persuasive US advocates of bold ideas can be. Across the Atlantic, salesmanship is part of success – let’s hear it for Bernard Madoff.

But the United States is big enough, diverse enough and decentralised enough to allow itself a bit of social experimentation here and there. You could even argue that the US does it so that our more cautious and less ruthless societies do not have to. Yet still we in the old world are seduced.

British Cookbook Primer

Diana Burrell over at Hail Britannia recently wrote an interesting article on British Cookbooks that covered the differences between American Cooking and British Cooking. Pretty cool article with facts I never knew. Check out the British Cookbook Primer here.

From the Article:

A British cookbook can be slightly puzzling to an American, so here’s a primer for you. I own about 50 cookbooks from the UK and Ireland alone, and I have to say, I prefer them to American cookbooks … and not because I’m an incorrigible Anglophile. I always try to buy the original printing of a British cookbook, not the version that’s been translated for American cooks. Here’s why.

The British Citizenship Test

This is making the rounds amongst the other Anglophile blogs, so it’s worth a mention here. Do you have what it takes to pass the British Citizenship test?

Well, now you can find out with this handy test put up by ITV’s morning show GMTV. See how many you can answers.

I passed with flying colors and it said I could move right into Buck House.

London Underground after Midnight

Time Magazine recently posted a series of pictures featuring the crews that work after hours on the London Underground.

It’s a pretty good insight into the works that can only go on during the 5 hours the service is shut down.
