Royal News Round Up: Commonwealth Games and a Visit to Norway

The Queen and I: Elizabeth Views Her Bronze Replica

Queen Elizabeth II unveiled a bust of herself by British sculptor Oscar Nemon at the House of Lords on October 20th.

Nemon, who died in 1985, is remembered for sculpting one of the major lions of the last century: Winston Churchill. It was only until Nemon’s family was clearing his attic did they discover the mould of Her Majesty.

Recast in bronze, the bust’s unveiling took place in front of more than 150 peers and staff from the House of Lords who had gathered in the Royal Gallery for the event.

The Queen is portrayed in her Coronation days wearing the Imperial State Crown.

Indian State Visit to England

India’s president Pratibha Patil began a three-day state visit to England on Tuesday, October 27th. It was the first time an Indian head of state visited the United Kingdom in 19 years.

Patil and her husband, Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat, were staying as the guests of Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor.

During the visit, the Queen and President Patil attended the launch of the XIX Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay.

Also in London last Thursday was Prince Charles, who was presented with a gabardine walking jacket by Burberry’s creative director Christopher Bailey. The Prince was there to officially open the new Burberry global headquarters.

The Prince’s wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, has been seen in many Burberry ensembles and accessories.

The president has not yet accepted, but if and when he does, Obama will spend the night at the Royal Palace in Oslo in the King Haakon VII suite.
