A low-cut black gown worn in 1981 by Lady Diana Spencer is to be sold at auction.
As the fiancee of the Prince of Wales, Diana caused a furor in her off-the-shoulder dress when she bent down to climb out of her car upon arriving at an event. The future royal bride inspired the headline “Daring Di sets fashion as she takes the plunge”.

Though she refrained from going out in such a gown again, Diana had effectively knocked the “Shy Di” image out of the way. She became a very public, media-driven Princess of Wales who set the fashion world alight.
The gown recently made a reappearance at the studio of designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the creators of Diana’s wedding dress.
The black taffeta gown is to be sold through Kerry Taylor Auctions in London on June 8th.
