Mohamed Al-Fayed sells Harrods
London’s famous Harrods department store has reportedly been sold by its controversial owner Mohamed Al Fayed. The Qatari royal family’s investment firm is said to have purchased it for more than £1.5bn.
Fayed has expressed his desire to officially retire and spend more time with his family. Fayed has owned Harrods since 1985.
In 2002, John Ritblat, the then-chairman of British Land, offered to buy Harrods from Fayed and lease it back to him. Ritblat’s offer was turned down. Fayed maintained that the store was not for sale until the recent deal with Qatar Holding.
The Egyptian tycoon lost his son, Dodi, in the 1997 Paris car crash that also claimed the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. He erected a monument to the couple within Harrods.

Middleton sister stirs wedding rumors
One might be forgiven for thinking Kate Middleton is secretly engaged to Prince William due to a mysterious diamond ring recently spotted on her middle finger.
According to reports, however, it’s Kate’s sister Pippa who has tongues wagging with her ring. Royal reporter Richard Eden states that Pippa’s new signet ring, rather than Kate’s sparkler, is a clear indication that Kate will soon be a princess. Their father, Michael, was reported to have inquired about a coat of arms from the College of Arms back in 2007. When Pippa, a guest at a friend’s wedding, turned up with the signet ring, it looked as though the Middletons had found their crest and were ready to put it on display.
“Protocol,” says Eden’s article, “suggests that someone marrying into the Royal family should have [a coat of arms].”
