There’s a lot going on during the World Cup – so much that it’s hard to keep straight. Thankfully, there’s an App for that. Well, actually several apps.
I’ve given a test to a few of the World Cup iPhone apps available – most of them are free – some paid – here is my assessment of the best World Cup iPhone and iPad apps.
ESPN World Cup iPhone App
Quick Review: Pretty full featured, has live audio of matches, follow your favorite team’s progress through the tournament. I like it a lot. Best of all, it’s free. However, if you’d like live video and more features, you’ll have to pay ESPN for the privilege. Also shows you the game schedule, which is pretty awesome.

AP Newswire World Cup iPhone App

Quick Review: Not as full featured as the ESPN app – but useful nonetheless. Plastered with ads to the point of annoyance. Allows you to track your favorite teams. No live audio or video but they have highlights and the match schedule. If I had to choose this over the ESPN app, I’d go with the ESPN app.

Daily Telegraph iPhone App

Quick Review: My favorite World Cup iPhone app – much slicker than all the others and has a real interesting user interface – if only the regular Telegraph iPhone app was this slick! Features pictures, live audio and much more.

The Times World Cup App

Quick Review: The most disappointing of all the iPhone World Cup applications. As you can see from the screen grab, it’s pretty plain and unexciting. It doesn’t feature any schedules, multimedia – just a bunch of text updates and blog posts. It doesn’t really serve much of a purpose compared to the other apps. I was very disappointed as I actually paid for this app.

Official FIFA World Cup iPhone Game
I haven’t had a chance to play this game yet – but it looks like a lot of fun and it’s on sale right now for the World Cup. Pick your favorite teams and players and have your own personal World Cup on your iPhone.
