  • A Little Brit History: Britain – The Natives are Revolting!
Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 in A Little Brit History – Comments: (3)
The British Beehive’ By George Cruickshank 1867.  Us Brits don’t get too excited by things, we are calm and reasonable. We certainly don’t get too upset by things like religion or politics. In fact, if you visit Britain then don’t even think of discussing politics in the Pub – remember the old drinkers maxim ‘never discuss politics or religion whilst you are drinking’ (Stick to the weather old boy – much safer!
  • Anglophile Facepalm: Jessia Biel, Culture Warrior
Posted on Friday, June 5th, 2009 in Anglophilia – Comments: (1)
Jessica Biel is making the rounds, promoting her movie Easy Virtue. Sadly, her publicists thought it would be a good idea for her to speak in public. The video says it all:As for the movie she is talking about, Easy Virtue, it’s terrible – mostly because she’s in it. I’ll have a review in the coming days.
  • Anglophile in Exile: New Sherlock Holmes movie trailer released
Posted on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 in Anglophile in Exile – Comments: (2)
Recently the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s new film, Sherlock Holmes, staring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law was released. As a Sherlockian, I am eagerly awaiting its release this Christmas. But after watching this trailer, I think I am going to have to suspend my knowledge of the stories and characters in order to enjoy it. Robert Downey, Jr., is not Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett – from what I see, he has taken of one literature’s greatest, well, dorks and made him into a quirky action hero.
  • Anglophile Reviews: HBO’s Into the Storm – Winston Churchill During World War II
Posted on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 in Anglophile Reviews – Comments: (3)
I really enjoyed HBO’s recent airing of “Into the Storm” and will watch it a million times. However, it has serious flaws and I don’t think it’s on the same caliber as it’s predecessor “The Gathering Storm.”The film, made in partnership between HBO and BBC Films is pretty much a direct sequel to “The Gathering Storm which aired several years ago.

  • Dispatches from the East: All Hail the Puppet Man!
Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 in Dispatches from the East – Comments: (0)
Every city has its local flavor, the eccentrics and the oddballs who give the place it’s unique feel.  Back in Kansas, Lawrence had quite a few–the Tan Man, a guy who used to spend every day working on his tan on the college campus hill with no other occupation.  Then there was ‘That’s My Dillons Guy’, who wore socks on his hands, a blanket as a coat, and wore a tattered red shirt on which was hand printied the cryptic phrase ‘That’s My Dillons’ (Dillon being a local supermarket that had apparently done him wrong at some point).
  • Dispatches from the North: “I’m huge in America”
Posted on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 in Anglophile Oddities – Comments: (6)
I have always loved celebrity gossip, not to the depth where I read or even believe tabloids but I have been known to log onto TMZ from time to time. One thing I have noticed since I have been in the UK is that celebrities love to talk about how big they are in the States. Some stars like Leona Lewis, Simon Cowell and Gordon Ramsay can rightfully claim to be global celebs but it has come to my attention that some of Britain’s biggest stars claim to have a career in the US when I can’t remember ever seeing them in an American tabloid and I am sure most Americans wouldn’t recognize them.
  • Dispatches from the South: Busting Out All Over

Even after seven years June still takes me by surprise.Winters in Sussex, despite being damp and dreary, are also quite green.  The mild climate is kind to grass and hedges so even in the depths of February, the landscape is predominantly green.  But then June comes around and reminds me of just how green it can get here.Like its neighbor, Ireland, England is an emerald isle, and for the same reason.
  • From the Telegraph: Great walks around London: the City
Posted on Sunday, June 7th, 2009 in London – Comments: (1)
From the Telegraph – first in an ongoing series of walks around London. From the article:An area of extraordinary richness and density, the “one square mile” is the oldest part of the capital, with continuous development since the founding of the Roman town in the first century AD. The architectural heritage reflects the vibrancy of a mercantile centre whose public, commercial and religious buildings have been subject to processes of considerable change while retaining examples of remarkable survival.

Photo from FlickrThe Washington Times recently featured an article that caught my attention. It was a report on a study of the most peaceful countries on the world. What were the criteria? From the Article:According to the Institute for Economics and Peace that rated the relative tranquility of 144 nations according to 23 “indicators” – including gun sales, the number of homicides, the size of the military, the potential for terrorism and the number of people in jail.
