Picture from Ibontxo on FlickrI was browsing some Expat forums recently and came across an interesting thread. It asked the question: What do you wish you knew about Britain before you moved there? There were some pretty interesting nuggets of information I thought I’d share with all of you. I’m sure most Anglophiles dream of living in the green and pleasant land that is Britain one day.
  • Anglophile in Exile: My Anglophile Story

By the time I was in middle school, I was a self-proclaimed Anglophile. My love for all things British developed out of an introduction to The Beatles and Sherlock Holmes, both of which I am still greatly passionate. On whim, I picked up a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories when I was in the fifth grade. I have no idea why, but I do remember the bookstore owner telling me these stories were “too old for me.

  • Dispatches from the North: Experiencing a bit of the FA Cup

I should start with a disclaimer that I am not a football/soccer fan. I believe in two fundamental principles when it comes to sports. First, there should be a lot of scoring. Watching things almost happen is not my idea of a good time. Second, and most importantly, someone should always win. When I watch a game I need to know that there will be an outcome otherwise it is a waste of time.

Seaton Carew in Hartlepool - From Flickr

Hello, fellow Anglophiles! My name is Lisa Coulson and I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. My search for a job outside of the automotive industry led me to Chicago, Illinois where one night in an English pub I met my husband – a sailor in the British Royal Navy from the Northeastern town of Hartlepool just outside of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
  • Dispatches from the North: My British Journey Begins…
Posted on Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 in Dispatches from the North – Comments: (2)
I have been a resident of the UK for nearly 6 months, and although in comparison to my first weeks here I have definitely come very far, I still have so many things to assimilate to. Thinking back to my very first day here, I felt thrust right into the thick of it. After our wedding my husband was deployed to the Middle East for 7 months so I remained in Chicago for the duration of his deployment.
  • Dispatches from the South: My Anglophile Story

I fell in love with England at 10:32 AM on the 12th of October 2001. I arrived on a morning flight to visit a woman I had met six weeks earlier while hiking in Ireland. This was my second trip abroad, and my first to Britain. The woman’s father met me at the airport (she was at work) and we took the train to their town.
  • Revealed: The Next Doctor Who
Posted on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 in Anglophilia – Comments: (2)
Big news for fans of British Sci-fi, David’s Tennant’s replacement as the venerable Doctor Who has been announced. And it’s not who anyone expected.I was expecting a woman. I was hoping for Patterson Joseph or James Nesbitt. I don’t know anything about this bloke named Matt Smith.Frankly, he looks a little too EMO to be playing the dynamic Doctor.
  • The Routemaster Reborn: The Return of a London Classic

Picture from Flickr: marcusjbOne of the biggest controversies in London in the past few years was the decision by the former Mayor, Ken Livingston to take the classic Routemaster Bus out of service and replace it with the hated bendy buses, despite promises to do otherwise.Well, last year Ken was pushed out and a new mayor, Boris Johnson was elected on a campaign based on bringing back the beloved London icon.
  • Unfortunate News: Trip Cancelled

You’ll notice the trip countdown is now absent from the sidebar.Well, my wife and I have decided to put our trip to London in March on hold. There were many reasons behind our decision that I won’t really go into. I’m really gutted about it but it’s the right thing to do right now. We’re planning on maybe going in November.
