  The first post in our weeklong series for Britannia in Brief week is my review of the book. In short, the book is awesome.My only complaint is that this is the book about Britain that I’ve always wanted to write and they’ve gotten to it first!Britannia in Brief is simply an encyclopedia of facts about the UK. It was written by couple Leslie Banker and William Mullins.

  I’m always a bit caught off guard when an American trend invades England. Three years ago, posh bowling alleys were springing up all over SoHo and cheerleading and line-dancing are available at the hottest dance studios in London. There’s one I’ve been avoiding though, as I think it’s almost too silly. However, when one of my best high school friends asks me to indulge in the hottest trend that’s not going away, how could I say no?

  After being here for a little more than six years, I’m stuck in the very strange position of still having a strong American accent, but having picked up enough British slang and nuance that every time I go back home I invariably say one or two things that cause the good folks of Lawrence, Kansas to look at me as if I’ve grown a second head.

  This might seem like a bit of a random subject but its at the forefront of my life at the moment. I have just adopted a dog, his name is Max and we adopted him through a dog charity here called Dogs Trust. Dogs Trust does fantastic work with dogs in Britain and my husband and I are happy to support them and are thrilled with the new addition to our family.

  Another one of the surprising differences British life has to offer is the Telly.First off, you can’t watch one without a license. No, really, they’ll come and arrest you if you do; they have ways of finding out. You can’t listen to the radio either, so don’t try. The reason is the disputed “License Fee;” a fee you must pay to the BBC if you want to watch TV or listen to the radio without The Bill coming to pay you a visit.

  From my Second Trip to LondonI’ve only ever flown British Airways to Britain in my time as an Anglophile. They were there with me on my first journey to Blighty, they were there for my last trip and they’ll be there for the next one. I will only consider flying BA – despite there being many other non-stop flights out of Chicago to London.
